λ Sam Rabin (British 1903-1991) The Main EventMixed media on paperSigned (lower left)53 x 76cm (20¾ x 29¾ in.)Provenance: From the collection of The Hon. Sir William McAlpineSam Rabin (British 1903-1991) was born in Manchester to Jewish-Russian exiles from Vitebsk. Rabin was truly versatile in his practice: a skilled artist, sculptor, teacher and athlete. He won a scholarship to the Manchester Municipal School of Art in 1914, at age 11 - the youngest person ever to attend the prestigious school under French artist Adolphe Valette. His formal education continued at the Slade School of Fine Art in London, under Henry Tonks. In 1925 he moved to Paris, where he met and was greatly influenced by Charles Despiau. In parallel, he competed as an amateur wrestler and boxer - becoming part of the Great Britain squad for the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam, and winning a bronze medal. Rabin worked as a sculptor in London on the Daily Telegraph building and London Transport headquarters, but despite this early success he was wasn't able to find a stable source of work. He funded his artistic career through professional wrestling during the 1930s. Later, Rabin went on to teach drawing at Goldsmith's College of Art, Bournemouth College of Art, and the Poole Art Centre. His students included Mary Quant, Bridget Riley and Tom Keating.
