Carlos Tercero, has to pass in his public / written entry by order of the Corregidor and Madrid City Council, Joaquín Ibarra Impresor, 1760, pp. 10-12. - Rose from Viejo, Isadora. Manuel Godoy, patron of the arts and collector. Doctoral thesis UCM. 1983. vol. II, pp. 331-332, # 431. On July 13, 1760, Carlos III celebrated his official entry into the town of Madrid through a spectacular tour adorned with ephemeral architecture and other ornaments devised by Pedro Rodríguez Campomanes and Vicente García de la Huerta, both architects of the intellectual program. The artistic project fell to the architect Ventura Rodríguez, general director of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando and the sculptor Felipe de Castro. The official race started from the Palacio del Buen Retiro, running through the most outstanding streets and squares of the town and court until reaching the Plaza del Zaguanete. Arches of triumph, allegorical statues, medallions, hangings and other ornaments were arranged at five points along the route, as stations, exalting the virtues of the Hispanic monarchy in its many aspects. The most important documentary testimony that has come down to us about these festivities is the Relation of the Arches, Inscriptions and Ornaments of the Race through which King Our Lord Don Carlos Tercero has to pass in the public entrance of July 13, 1760, published in Madrid by order of the magistrate and the Town Council. This valuable book in which this kind of juyeuses entrées is described in great detail has its visual equivalent in a series of probably eight paintings, three of them lost, made by Lorenzo Quirós that belong to the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, today deposited in the Museum of History of Madrid. Although we do not know the details surrounding this commission, the first documentary reference is found in the inventory of the paintings in the Manuel Godoy collection made by Fréderic Qulliet in January 1808. After the fall of the politician, part of the seized collection remained in the Palace de Buenavista, genesis of the ill-fated Josefino museum, until its conclusion at the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts. Probably in this interval the other three paintings of the cycle were lost, as well as the bulk of the collection. The Perspective that we now present is one of the three losses that corresponds to the Ornato de la Puerta de Guadalajara as described in the Relationship of 1760: "Its adornment is made up of two arches, with two intercolumniations, that unite them, and span the patio to Mayor and Nueva streets, which leads to the Plaza Mayor from the Puerta de Guadalajara. In the medallions that are pending in each one of the arches shows four notable events of the king: (...) the marriage of the king, our lord Carlos III with (...) the queen María Amalia of Saxony; the coronation and anointing of the king in Palermo; solemn ceremony in Florence on March 9, 1735 and the king girding the sword to the Infante of Spain Don Fernando King of Naples ".
