He is well known for his avant-garde works that challenge the traditional notions of art and its boundaries. Sheng Qi's artistic journey has been shaped by his experiences during the tumultuous years of the Cultural Revolution in China, which have been the source of inspiration for many of his works. After graduating from the Anhui Academy of Fine Arts in 1984, Sheng Qi moved to Beijing to pursue a career as an artist. He initially worked as a political propaganda artist, creating artworks that glorified the ruling Communist Party. However, in the early 1990s, he became disillusioned with the political system and decided to devote himself to creating art that reflected his personal beliefs and experiences. In 1995, Sheng Qi moved to Italy, where he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. This experience had a profound impact on his artistic development and helped him to develop his unique style, which combines traditional Chinese ink painting techniques with modern Western art forms. Sheng Qi's works are known for their powerful and evocative imagery, which often explores themes of human suffering and the human condition. He uses a range of mediums, including painting, sculpture, and performance art, to create works that are both visually stunning and intellectually engaging. Some of Sheng Qi's most notable works include "A Momentary Suspension of Reason," a series of paintings that depict the human body as a fragile and vulnerable entity, and "The Red Memory," a performance art piece that explores the impact of the Cultural Revolution on Chinese society. Over the years, Sheng Qi has exhibited his works in numerous solo and group exhibitions in China, Europe, and the United States. He has received critical acclaim for his contributions to contemporary art, and his works are held in many public and private collections around the world. Today, Sheng Qi continues to create art that challenges and inspires audiences around the world. His commitment to exploring the complexities of the human experience has made him one of the most important artists of his generation, and his legacy continues to shape the art world today. -

Sheng Qi is an internationally-recognised contemporary Chinese artist famed for his unique body of art and distinctive painting style. Sheng Qi was born in Anhui Province in 1965. He is a talented individual, his talent spanning painting, performance art and photography. Sheng Qi had the best collegiate career, studying in some of the world’s best institutions for art. The artist attended the Central Academy of Art and Design in Beijing and he also lived and worked in Italy for a few years before earning a masters in fine arts from the Central Saint Martin’s Academy of Art and Design in London, England. Sheng Qi is synonymous with personal defiance following the events (student-led demonstration) in Tiananmen, 1989. Distressed by the massacre of the demonstrators by armed troops, Sheng Qi chopped off the pinky on his left hand and buried it in a flowerpot, which remained in Beijing throughout his European exile. Since then, he has woven the image of this self-mutilation into his work. He has been featured in Phaidon’s 500 Self Portraits, The Chinese Art Book and Body of Art alongside contemporary and old masters such as Ai Weiwei, Andy Warhol and Michelangelo. Sheng Qi’s artworks have been collected by prestigious museums such as the Metropolitan in New York and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Sheng’s work is driven by two objectives — to change the direction of where he sees Chinese contemporary art is heading, and simply, to ask questions. His work is daring, tackling unprecedented subjects to make the viewers think, push boundaries and ask questions.
