      Est: $1,200 - $1,600

Abstract form, ca. 1971, grey/orange stone, signed "Paneloo" and with disc no. E5-244, 3 x 5 x 1.25 in, 12.5 x 9 x 3.5 cm Provenance: John and Mary Robertson Collection Exhibited and illustrated in Jean Blodgett, "Selections from the John and Mary Robertson Collection of Inuit Sculpture," Agnes Etherington Art Centre, Queen's University 1986 (cat. #4); Eskimo Fantastic Art (p. 32); Inuit Art in the 1970s (p. 37); illustrated in Swinton 1972/1992 #195. Paniluk's idiosyncratic, fluid abstract style is grounded in her ideas about imagining and making her art-"I tried to make my carvings represent something, [but] not necessarily a particular being"-and is backed up with a surprisingly self-assured reaction to criticism: "My neighbours sometimes came to tell me that I carved ordinary, pointed objects, and got well paid for them. I would ask them in return whether they could make these carvings that they called ordinary pointed objects. They said no, they couldn't make such carvings." Paniluk Qamanirq, interview in We Don't Live in Snow Houses Now: Reflections of Arctic Bay (Ottawa: Canadian Arctic Producers, 1976), 159.
