Angki Purbandono (b. Indonesia, 1971) Miss Gorilla

Miss Gorilla is a photograph which features a striking juxtaposition of a doll’s head attached to the body of a yellow gorilla, exposing the common stereotype between masculine and feminine. A surreal dreamlike quality is achieved by capturing the object at an angle where it is seen floating in isolation against a dark background. The image was produced by placing the object on a scanner’s glass plate, where the combination of uniform light and limited depth of field results in heightened clarity of details and vividness in colour, a process which contributes towards an expressive visual quality of the object. By arranging and composing different elements together, the artist has introduced a new context for interpreting images, which simultaneously challenges the dynamic relationship between the artwork and the spectator. Angki Purbandono is a visual artist from Yogyakarta, Indonesia. He studied at the Modern School of Design, Yogyakarta, Indonesia (1993-1994) and later enrolled in the Indonesia Institute of Art, Yogyakarta, Indonesia (1994-1999). He is a board member of the Ruang MES 56, which represents an alternative space for contemporary photography in Indonesia. He was granted an Asian Artist Fellowship scholarship from National Museum of Contemporary Art (Republic of Korea), where he spent a year from 2005 to 2006 living in Seoul. During this period, he began exploring methods of utilising the scanning device to record objects. The experimentation has led him to become the first artist in Indonesia to produce scan photography art. His scanography series first gained acceptance when it was exhibited under a project titled Space and Shadows - Contemporary Art from Southeast Asia at Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin, Germany (2005). His solo exhibitions include The Swimmers – Prison Art Programs, Mizuma Gallery, Singapore (2014), Invisible Cities, Art Project Gallery, Hong Kong (2013), Happy Scan, Biasa Art Space, Bali, Indonesia (2008). His group exhibitions include ARTJOG8 – INFINITY IN FLUX, Taman Budaya Yogyakarta, Indonesia (2015), Jeonju International Photography Festival, After Photography, Jeonbuk Art Center Chamberlain (2015), SHOUT! In this, a naked baby doll kneels in prayer on a dirigible of filamentous fungus seemingly floating in a dark background. The incongruity of the new reality may allude to something sinister, but seeing that Angki is known for projecting more positive messages, this could be for a lark, though the aftertaste could be disturbing. What is the relationship with the cow inside the core of a yellow seed-studded fruit? That is for the viewer to ponder, although the artist Angki Purbandono may have more specific intention rather than a lark. The clue may have something to do with the presumptive title, The Last One. Angki, no stranger to Henry Butcher, is known for his photograph-mediated art, particularly his scanographics, simply photographicimages created from scanning objects using a flat-bed image scanner. The scanographics first made its impact in his exhibition, Space and Shadows – Contemporary Art from South-east Asia at the World Cultural House in Germany in 2005. He studied Photography at the Indonesian Institute of Arts in 1994-1999 and was the co-founder of the Ruang MES 56 Alternative Space in Yogyakarta, to advance contemporary photography. He was awarded the Asian Artist Fellowship at the Changdong Art Studio, South Korea, in 2006.

Angki Purbandono has devised a kind of pictorial mediated reality by scanning objects or photographs as part of his art. These scanographic works were unveiled in the Space and Shadows: Contemporary Art from South-east Asia at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin, Germany, in 2005. In 2005 to 2006, he was living in Seoul under the Asian Artists Fellowship programme from South Korea's Museum of Contemporary Art. He has had residencies also in Hong Kong, Singapore and Fukuoka in Japan.Angki is no stranger to Malaysia, having been showcased in the Kissing The Methods at Richard Koh Fine Art in Kuala Lumpur in 2009. His other notable solos include Invisible Cities, Hong Kong (2013), Angki Purbandono and PAPs, Mizuma Gallery, Singapore (2014) and Top Pop at Soo Bin Art Plus Gallery, Singapore (2011). He studied at the Modern School of Design, Yogyakarta, Indonesia (1993 - 1994) and later enrolled in the Indonesia Institute of Art, Yogyakarta, Indonesia (1994 - 1999). He is a board member of the Ruang MES 56, which represents and alternative space for contemporary photography in Indonesia. He was granted an Asian Artist Fellowship scholarship from National Museum of Contemporary Art (Republic of Korea), where he spent a year from 2005 - 2006 living in Seoul. During this period, he began exploring methods of utilising the scanning device to record objects. The experimentation has leaded him to become the first artist in Indonesia to produce scan photography art. His scanography series first gained acceptance when it was exhibited under a project titled Space and Shadows-Contemporary Art from Southeast Asia at Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin, Germany (2005). His solo exhibitions include The Swimmers – Prison Art Programs, Mizuma Gallery, Singapore (2014), Invisible Cities, Art Project Gallery, Hong Kong (2013), Happy Scan, Biasa Art Space, Bali, Indonesia (2008). His group exhibitions include ARTJOG8 – INFINITY IN FLUX, Taman Budaya Yogyakarta, Indonesia (2015), Jeonju International Photography Festival, After Photography, Jeonbuk Art Center Chamberlain (2015), SHOUT! Indonesian Contemporary Art, Museo D’arte Contemporanea (MACRO), Rome, Italy (2014), and Indonesian Eye: Fantasies & Realities, Saatchi Gallery, London, UK (2011).

Angki Purbandono, Indonesia's most prominent artist specialising in scanography - the process of producing artistic digital images by means of an ordinary flat-bed image scanner - creates stimulating digital images of ordinary objects and is featured at HBArt auction for the first very time. Melon Territory depicts a half-cut melon, revealing the wonderful shape and colour of melon innards and a surprising plastic toy soldier wedged in the seeds. Calvin Tan, curator of Kissing the Method, in which this work was exhibited writes in the catalogue: "Angki's scanner images therefore allow the viewer to comprehend the expressiveness and tactile qualities of these everyday objects that one often takes for granted. The even sharpness which the scanner makes possible has resulted in a heightened perception of detail and vividness of colour. [...] "Collectively, the scans invite a level of intimacy into the artist's life and a chance for the viewer to pick out things we would find familiar. The sheer aesthetic pleasure that these scans manage to extract from their prosaic objects are also found in Angki's images. Angki's work has been an artistic response to a situation where photography is available to everyone with a digital camera. His work shifts the locus of photographic art towards the context of meaning creation and the person behind the creation as a way to extend the possibilities of this medium."
