(BRITISH, 1799-1867): 'HAULING UP A BARGE', 1858 a large oil on canvas maritime / coastal scene, with figures at a harbour, a windmill in the background, signed and dated lower right 'J.A. Pullen 1858', in a giltwood frame, with paper label to the reverse 'The Bourne Gallery, Member of LAPADA', the painting 67cm x 52cm, the frame 83cm x 67cm A pair of genre scenes by Puller were sold at Sotheby's, London, 19 January 2006, lot 38, £7200. John Anthony Puller was a well known London painter who exhibited for many years at the Royal Acedemy. First in 1821 with two landscapes, and then for many years up until 1862. The present painting is typical of his work which included landscapes, nautical scenes and genre paintings.
