    Est: €700 - €900

[Stained glass]. Jaap Pronk & Van Bommel Haarlem. Archive containing several hundred designs for stained glass (windows), ±1925-1976 (mainly before 1950), mainly (colour) pencil and/ or watercolour/ gouache, on paper (mainly)/ flimsy, occas. mounted on contemp. board, various sizes (miniature to ±50x25 cm.), almost all w. signature "Jaap Pronk en Van Bommel Haarlem" or similar in lower right corner (on mount) and w. scale-indication. = Very rich archive with possibly up to 1000 designs showing the work of the glaziers Jacob Pronk (1898-1977) and Eduard van Bommel (1889-1958), who met in the workshop of Willem Bogtman and started their firm in 1924, which Pronk continued on his own after Van Bommel's death. A great variety of themes is represented, such as Dutch history, landscapes, genre scenes, birds and other animals, flowers, heraldry (Pronk's speciality), and symbolic, allegorical, mythological and religious scenes, varying from traditional to modern, (apparently) free designs to commission work (mainly in/ concerning Haarlem but also i.a. Amsterdam, Groningen, Arnhem, Utrecht and even Göttingen) and from window panes to lampshades. The commission works range from designs for private homes to (more extensive) commissions from i.a. shops, cafés, hotels, firms and churches, be it either general window decoration or commemorative windows (i.a. jubilees). Some designs are accompanied by explanatory captions and of some commissions, more than one (up to ±10) drawing is present. The drawings show extreme technical skill and much detail, even in the very small sizes, and the more elaborate designs are highly decorative in themselves. The greater part of the designs is in the rather traditional, pictorial style of R.N. Roland Holst. Some show the influence of Jan Toorop, and a small number contains a certain degree of expressionism and abstraction. The archive also comes with several photographs of executed designs (in duplicate), of some of which the original designs are also present, and includes a few pictures of Pronk (and Van Bommel?) at work. Some names and/ or addresses in Haarlem of designs present: Dreef 22 (then K.L.T.B.), Haarlemsche Brandverzekering, Eerste Coöperatieve Lijkbezorging and Apothecary Loomeyer (a wrought iron signboard), and outside Haarlem: Restaurant Riche (Zandvoort) and Bodega Old Dutch (Rotterdam). For more information on Pronk & VanBommel see C. Hoogveld, Glas in lood in Nederland 1817-1968, p.85, 88 and 311. SEE ILLUSTRATIONS PLATE LXXXVI.
