    J. PROBST (*) after DÜRER (*1471), Entombment of Christ, around 1770, Copper engraving

    Est: €300 - €400

Johann Michael Probst (unkn. -1809 ibid.) after Albrecht Dürer (1471 Nuremberg - 1528 ibid.): Entombment of Christ, c. 1770, Copper engraving Technique: Copper engraving on Paper Inscription: Lower middle signed: " "SICVT in AD? OM | NES MORIVNTVR ITA ET in CHRISTO | OMNES VIVIFICAB | VNTVR", am Baum Monogramm Dürers: "AD", am Sarkophag datiert: "1507"". Date: c. 1770 Description: Other impressions of this engraving are signed by the Augsburg engraver Johann Michael Probst. Previously attributed to Dürer himself due to the monogram and the lack of Probst's signature on the rare earlier impressions. It was Heller who first endeavoured to uncover the false attribution. He included the engraving in his work and labelled it "after Dürer". He reports in detail on the various conditions and surmises that the engraving was made after a lost painting by Dürer. The plate of this engraving was still in Augsburg during his lifetime, but was soon melted down. | Watermark: "[...]MBART MUSIR..." Keywords: Old Master, Albrecht Dürer, Religion, Christianity, Entombment, Passion, Nicodemus, Mary, John, Bible, 18th century, Rococo, Religious, Germany, Size: Paper: 23,8 cm x 17,9 cm (9,4 x 7 in)

    America

    Est: $375 - $450

Scarce, curious map of the Americas that was based on the cartography of Johann Schreiber. It shows a very late depiction of the "mythical island of California" with the "Terra Esonis Incognita" coastline stretching towards Asia, and an amorphous Great Lakes. The title cartouche includes the incongruent appearance of an elephant and a lion. At right is a panel of German text describing the regions and colonial possessions. Additional text describing America is at bottom.
