William Matthew Prior Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1806 - d. 1873

(b Bath, ME, 1806; d Boston, 1873) American Painter. William Prior is most well known for his portraits, though he did also execute some landscapes and experimented with painting on glass. In the early years of his career he traveled from town to town around New England in search of commissions; often compensated only with room and board. He specialized in stylized, flat portraits, especially of children. Though he was capable of more naturalistic, painterly works, most of his paintings are done in this abstract and flattened style because they could be executed more quickly and thus offered to patrons at lower cost. He advertised in the "Maine Inquirer" in 1831 that "persons who wished a flat picture can have a likeness whithout shade or shadow at one-quarter price". It is believed that Prior would often travel with partially completed templates onto which he would then add the sitter’s likeness and some identifying attributes. In 1841 Prior settled permanently in Boston, where he remained to the end of his very successful career.

William Matthew Prior (May 16, 1806 - January 21, 1873) was an American folk artist known for his portraits, particularly of families and children. The son of Captain William, a shipmaster, and Sarah Bryant Prior, William Matthew Prior was born in Bath, Maine on May 16, 1806. Prior completed his first painted portrait in 1823, at the age of 17 after training under Charles Codman, another Maine-based painter. In 1840, Prior moved to East Boston, Massachusetts from his native Bath with his in-laws, notably fellow painter Sturtevant J. Hamblin, to invigorate his career as an artist. The paintings of Prior and Hamblin, when unsigned, are so similar in style as to be indistinguishable, and are commonly attributed to the "Prior-Hamblin School". According to the 1852 directory of Boston, Prior lived at 36 Trenton Street in East Boston. He was a follower of the preacher William Miller, who prophesied that the end of the world was imminent. Prior wrote two books about Miller's teachings, The King's Vesture (1862) and The Empyrean Canopy (1868). Prior died on January 21, 1873 and was interred at Woodlawn Cemetery in Everett, Massachusetts. About 1,500 portraits are attributed to Prior. His works are in many museums and institutions around the United States including the Harvard Art Museums, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the National Gallery of Art. Prior is the subject of an exhibition, Artist and Visionary: William Matthew Prior Revealed, shown at the Fenimore Art Museum, Cooperstown, New York (May 26 - December 31, 2012) and subsequently at the American Folk Art Museum in New York City (January 24 - May 26, 2013).

    Est: $800 - $1,200

Massachusetts, Maine,1806-1873 Depicts Lucy Colfax Prince, wife of Edward St. John Neally of Bath, Maine, dressed in black with a lace collar. Neally attended Bowdoin before leaving to join his cousin Jonathan Cilley's Law office in Thomaston, Maine. William Prior was an itinerant portrait artist having painted all throughout New England. Prior is best known for his naive style portraits that he advertised for a quarter of the price of detailed portraits, but also painted more sophisticated works on glass. Prior's work was unique in that the prices he charged for his work varied by detail, flatter paintings were cheapest while more detailed paintings cost more, however his cheapest paintings were often the most vibrant. His work can be found in the Portland Museum of Art, Maine; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and the Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum amongst others.
