Note: Melton Prior was an English artist and war correspondent for The Illustrated London News from the early 1870s until 1904. Prior was one of the leading illustrators of late Victorian Britain, noted for his ability to quickly sketch scenes. His pencil sketches were sent back to London where they were re-drawn by studio artists and engraved on wood-blocks for printing in the Saturday issues of the Illustrated London News.

Printed on a whole page of the illustrated London weekly "The Illustrated London News". Melton Prior (1845-1910) served as a war correspondent and illustrator of the magazine. Approx. 56X37.5 cm. Good condition. Creases, stains, folding marks and marks of pins in the center of the print. Framed. Unexamined out of frame. Provenance: Collection of Willy Lindwer.

Engraving depicts an intense scene between the British Army and the Sudanese Jihadists at the Battle of Tamasi of March 13th, 1884 during the War in the Soudan. Sudanese soldiers in blue & white battle with spears and swords against the British in red and local tribesman in loincloths. Unframed sight size 14.25" x 41".

    Sketches of the Zulu War by Melton Prior, 1879 (titled thus on portfolio). An album of drawings in pencil, watercolour and bodycolour, all signed and dated by the artist, the sheets mounted to size and bound in a morocco-backed album (732 x 530mm.), housed in a morocco portfolio with wooden mounts and brass clasp (defective), titled in gilt on upper cover, large folio (600 x 830mm.), 1879 CATALOGUE NOTE The first drawing shows Sir Thomas Hesketh galloping in to inform General Lord Chelmsford of developments in battle. Melton Prior (1845-1910) was a noted artist-reporter in the employ of, among others, the Illustrated London News. He was described by that publication as "the doyen of war artists"; during his career he covered conflicts in Africa, South America, Burma and other locations. "Through his work in the Illustrated London News, Prior helped shape the Victorian public's perceptions of the empire and of war. His pictures remain useful historical sources and have been much reproduced, particularly in works of military history" (Oxford DNB).
