BIOGRAPHY: From 1970, Ernest Principato has been painting in Provincetown, Massachusetts, and had had an artistic connection with Provincetown since 1970. He attended the Vesper George School of Art in Boston.In 1970, he began taking lessons from portrait artist Everett Raymond Kinstler and with Richard Seyffert at the Art Students League of New York City. In 1971 he was selected to study with Boston painter Robert Douglas Hunter, and two years later he began study at the Atelier of R.H. Ives Gammell at the Fenway Studio Building in Boston.Then Mr. Principato returned to the Art Students League where he received a Ford Foundation Scholarship and a Merit Scholarship, which enabled him to study portrait and figure painting with sculptor Jose De Creeft and anatomy teacher Robert Beverly Hale. Mr. Principato went on to study with Robert Schultz and with Provinctown painter Henry Hensche for eight summers (one year straight through the following summer) at the Cape School of Art, Provincetown, Massachusetts.He also studied with /illustrators the late Tom Lovell and Cleve Woodward who was the portrait/figure monitor for Charles W.Hawthorne's summer classes at the Cape Cod School of Art. Other teachers were portrait artists Cedric and Joanette Egeli of Edgewater, Maryland, and also participated in their two-week summer course for outdoor portrait/figure classes offered at Cape Cod, Massachusetts in the summer.In addition to numerous art associations, Principato has been a member and participant in the following art organizations: National Arts Club of New York City, Pastel Society of America, Society of American Impressionists, the Art Students League of N.Y., and the International Society of Marine Painters. The artist founded American Art Productions to expand an understanding of color as the essential element of impressionist painting.An early collector of commissioned work of Ernest Principato is Dr. Cornelius Vermeule, Curator of Classical Painting and Museum Curator at Boston's Museum of Fine Arts.
