Ferdinand Piloty sen. (1786 Homburg - 1844 Munich) after Francesco Primaticcio (1504 - 1570 ): Christ preaches in the park to an attentive crowd, c. 1808, Lithography Technique: Lithography on Paper Inscription: At the lower part signed in the printing plate: "Primaticio | F: Piloty del:". Date: c. 1808 Description: Ferdinand Piloty was a German lithographer who made a name for himself in particular through the graphic reproduction of old hand drawings. Between 1808 and 1815, he and Johann Nepomuk Strixner published an extensive series of lithographs based on old master drawings in Munich. This multifaceted work emphasises the full skill of the two artists, who copied the drawings onto the stone with a sensitive eye and convey a good impression of the original work in their reproductions. A characteristic feature of many of the sheets is the basis of a discreetly coloured clay plate with scratched-out areas, presumably intended to imitate the white heightening and different paper colours of the originals. Piloty and Strixner used the technique of lithography in all its facets and always endeavoured to give their reprints the same delicacy and depth that characterise the hand drawings of the Old Masters. Keywords: Lithograph series, Old Masters, Jesus Christ, Sermon, Christianity, Bible, 19th century, Romanticism, Religious, Germany,

After Germain Pilon gilt-bronze group of the Three Graces, Barbedienne

    Est: $2,000 - $3,000

Late 19th/early 20th century, the base marked ''F. Barbedienne Fondeur'' and with the A. Collas Brevete Reduction Mecanique pastille, depicting three addorsed classically draped figures on an incurved tripartite base. Note: Germain Pilon (1535-1590) was France's preeminent Renaissance sculptor. He was commissioned in 1561 by Francesco Primaticcio, on behalf of Catherine de Medici, to create this work, entitled the ''Heart of Henry II'', in memory of her late husband who had died from a wound received in a tournament. The original, which has been on view at the Louvre since 1816, contained the actual heart of Henry II in an urn above the heads of the figures. Using his advanced technique of ''reduction mecanique'', developed with his partner Achille Collas, Ferdinand Barbedienne produced a series of this two-fifth scale reproduction of the ''Heart of Henry II'' which was illustrated in Barbedienne's 1886 catalogue. Provenance: Property from the Estate of Mr. & Mrs. Joseph J. Pinola
