BERTRAM WALTER PRIESTMAN (Yorkshire, England, 1865-1951). "Coastal Landscape with Figures," 1919. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. It has slight damage to the frame. Measurements: 63 x 75 cm; 85 x 98 x 4 cm (frame). Although Bertram Walter Priestman spent most of his life in England, he also traveled and worked in the central United States. His work is held at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, of which he was elected a member in 1923. He worked in landscape painting, portraiture and genre subjects. On this occasion he offers us a coastal landscape next to a high cliff. The fluid brushstroke brings some movement to the scene, as does the play between dark and illuminated planes. It is clear the relationship of this work with approaches that emerged thanks to the pictorial avant-garde of the time.

Bertram Walter Priestman (New Brunswick / United Kingdom, England, Canada, 1868 - 1951) "Bradford by Midnight". Oil on canvas. Inscription verso. Christie's label verso. Sight Size: 17.5 x 23.5 in. Overall Size: 24.5 x 30.5 inches. Priestman studied under Edwin Moore, Arnesby Brown and at the Slade School of Art. He was studio assistant to Sir William Llewellyn, PRA., and he had a house and garden studio in Walberswick 1914 - 1927, where he tutored pupils including Edward Seago. He traveled extensively in Europe and the United States and exhibited regularly at The Royal Academy, Goupil Gallery, ROI, Walker Art Gallery and widely elsewhere. He was elected to the American Royal Academy as a painter on April 20th, 1916, elected to the Royal Academy on June 26, 1923, and elected a Senior Royal Academician on Jan 1, 1944. He won a series of international medals. Many galleries in Britain, including Liverpool, Bristol, Birmingham and Manchester and a large number of overseas holdings hold examples of his work. Worchester City Museum holds the oil on canvas painting entitled Clouds over the Orwell. National Museums and Galleries of Wales holds the oil painting "Landscape with Canal 1905" The Royal Academy of Arts Collection holds the oil painting, "Near Wareham Dorset 1923". His paintings in the United States are hard to find and would be considered rare. He spent most of his time while in the United States in the central US from Illinois to Colorado.
