Johann Wilhelm Preyer: Still Life with Grapes, Peaches and Apricots

    Est: €35,000 - €45,000

PREYER, JOHANN WILHELM 1803 Rheydt - 1889 Düsseldorf Title: Still Life with Grapes, Peaches and Apricots. Date: 1848. Technique: Oil on canvas. Measurement: 41.5 x 51cm. Notation: Signed and dated lower right: "J.W.Preyer München 1848". Frame: Framed. Provenance: Private ownership, Germany; Collection Dirk and Ursula Budde, Kerken. Johann Wilhelm Preyer and his daughter Emilie are certainly among the most important German still life painters of the 19th century. Johann Wilhelm Preyer received comprehensive training at the Academy of Art in Düsseldorf from 1822, initially under Peter Cornelius and then as a master student of Wilhelm Schadow. From the late 1820s onwards, he concentrated on still lifes. The young artist travelled to Holland and Italy for around 10 years, also living in Munich for a few years during this time before settling back in Düsseldorf in 1844. Still lifes were held in rather low esteem in academy circles. However, Johann Wilhelm Preyer was soon able to overcome this. His works quickly met with great success among the public, critics and collectors. His technical virtuosity in painting, with which he was able to reproduce the plasticity of objects and the texture of surfaces, fascinated viewers just as much as the special mood of light (catalogue 1268) and the strict composition of his works. The paintings in which Johann Wilhelm Preyer arranged grapes next to their alcoholic products in fine glasses are also very popular (catalogue 1269 and 1270). The demand for Preyer's paintings eventually became so great that he painted to order for domestic and foreign customers and lived in secure prosperity. Johann Wilhelm Preyer himself did not attend the academy as a teacher, instead giving private painting lessons, mainly to female pupils. When the artistic talent of his daughter Emilie, born in 1849, became apparent, she was denied official training as a woman. Fortunately, she had a 'painter father' who encouraged her great talent. He trained her and was also able to recruit fellow artists and professors Heinrich Mücke and Hans Fredrik Gude as private teachers for his daughter. Emilie Preyer is certainly her father's best pupil and a worthy successor. At the highest level of painting technique, she largely followed her father in her choice of motifs. As her particular speciality, she uses the batiste tablecloth as a base for the arranged fruit. Her daughter's paintings differ from her father's in their treatment of light in particular. In Johann Wilhelm Preyer's works, there is always a defined incidence of light, but his arranged objects seem to be 'enveloped' in light. Emilie usually illuminates her motifs more harshly, almost objectively. In doing so, she explored a way of seeing that would be influential in the 1920s. Emilie Preyer certainly benefited from her father's fame and his contacts with dealers and collectors, but she soon succeeded in being recognised as a successful artist in her own right. In the United States in particular, she had a solid circle of collectors and was able to live independently as a painter by selling her brilliant still lifes. Between 1835 and 1843 he continued his studies travelling through the Netherlands, Munich, Northern Italy, Switzerland and Tirol. Inspired by the work of Rachel Ruysch (1664-1750) and the tradition of other seventeenth century still life painters such as Kalf, Claesz. and Heda, he turned to the minute and carefully detailed painting of flowers and fruit. Today he is considered to be one of best artists of the genre in the 19th century and his works are widely collected from Germany to the United States.

Johann Wilhelm Preyer, Still Life with Grapes, Plums and Peaches

    Est: €30,000 - €35,000

Signed and dated lower right: WPreyer München 1843 Johann Wilhelm Preyer, born in Rheydt in Westphalia in 1803, studied painting at the nearby Düsseldorf Academy. He decided to paint still lifes already as a young artist and remained faithful to the genre throughout his life. Preyer thus became the most important German still-life painter in the 19th century. With few exceptions, his entire oeuvre consists almost exclusively of still lifes. Among them are mainly fruits - plums, mirabelles, peaches, bunches of grapes together with some leaves, occasionally some nuts and more rarely a wine goblet - which he arranges on a stone slab. Preyer's pictures are carefully planned ensembles of impressive objectivity and calm. He achieves this through the precisely observed appearance of the items depicted and a superb painting technique. Preyer denies himself any personal emotion or ductus. His unmistakable style is the result of this objectivity. Thus his arrangements are seldom in defined pictorial spaces and almost always lack a specific light source and are therefore illuminated, as it were, from within by a neutral, uniform light. Wilhelm Preyer moved to Munich in 1837 with Johann Peter Hasenclever for further training. There, in 1840, King Ludwig I acquired the famous painting "Bockbier-Glas" for the Schleißheim Gallery. He returned to Düsseldorf in autumn 1843. This painting, dated 1843 and painted in Munich, must therefore have been one of the last works from this period.

Preyer 1856, oil on canvas, 29.5 x 38.5 cm, framed Provenance: Gallery Paffrath, Düsseldorf; Private Collection, Germany. Catalogued and Illustrated in: Siegfried Weiß, Hans Paffrath (Ed.), Johann Wilhelm (1803–1889) and Emilie (1849–1930) Preyer, Düsseldorf 2009, p. 198, no. 130 (colorplate p. 95). Johann Wilhelm Preyer was a prominent still life painter from the Düsseldorf School of Painting. Originally from Rheydt, Preyer studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy with fellow painter Peter von Cornelius, and as a master student of Wilhelm von Schadow. Preyer was a part of the German Romantic movement, but travelled to Italy, Holland and Switzerland which allowed him to develop a versatile and accomplished artistic style. He often returned to previous compositions rearranging its various elements. His focus was to paint his still lifes with fine detail and in a highly naturalistic manner. Preyer often used brown and yellow tones but also included a subtle light source, allowing him to play with shading and lighter tints. This painting makes no exception. With invisible brushstrokes, Preyer makes the light interact with the transparency of the glass and the sparkling wine, as well as representing the opacity of the grapes. He paints the bubbles in the glass and the insect eating away at the fruit, hinting at a human presence.

    JOHANN WILHELM PREYER Weintrauben.

    Est: €4,000 - €6,000

JOHANN WILHELM PREYER Weintrauben.,Öl auf Karton, auf Pappe aufgezogen. 17,5 : 13 cm.
