(Düsseldorf 1849–1930) Still Life with Two Walnuts, Plums, Grapes, a Peach on a Branch and a Fly, signed, dated Emilie Preyer 1871, oil on canvas, 22 x 27 cm, framed Provenance: (Probably) Collection of Robert (1898–1972) and Bertha Tilly (born in 1899), New York; Their Sale, New York, 1949; Sale, Sotheby’s New York, 28 October 1986, lot 248; Sale, Beijers Auktioner, Stockholm, 7 November 1989, lot 257; Sale, Sotheby’s, New York, 20 February 1992, lot 12; Private Collection, Austria. Catalogued and illustrated in: Siegfried Weiß, Hans Paffrath (ed.), Johann Wilhelm (1803–1889) und Emilie (1849–1930) Preyer, Düsseldorf 2009, p. 209, no. 8. Emilie Preyer's still lifes are unparalleled in their naturalism. With a mastery reminiscent of the Old Masters, the Düsseldorf artist brings fruit, leaves, and nuts to life with such vivid realism that they appear freshly picked. Her rich, vibrant colours continue to captivate viewers to this day. Preyer avoids elaborate interiors, opting for neutral backgrounds that allow her subjects—bathed in soft light—to take centre stage. A hallmark of her work is the inclusion of delicate details such as wasps, flies, and shimmering droplets, evoking the freshness of the fruit. Born into a family of painters in 1849, Preyer was taught by her father, Johann Wilhelm Preyer, a celebrated still-life artist. Denied formal education due to her gender, she pursued private lessons at the Düsseldorf Academy. By the age of 16, she had completed her first oil painting, and just three years later, she was already an established artist, regularly exhibiting at prominent galleries like Bismeyer & Kraus and Eduard Schultes. Over the course of her career, she produced around 250 paintings, which found admirers around the world. Despite the rise of new artistic movements, Preyer remained committed to her classical style, living quietly in her family home in Düsseldorf. Today, her works are once again receiving the recognition they deserve, celebrated for their exquisite technique and enduring allure.

Emilie Preyer, Still Life with Plums, Grapes and Peaches on a White Tablecloth

    Est: €20,000 - €25,000

Signed lower right: Emilie Preyer Emilie Preyer began drawing and painting in watercolours as a child. Since she was a woman, she was not allowed to attend the academy and so she received her first artistic training from her father Wilhelm Preyer, whose style she adopted and developed further. Thus, she too preferred the still life genre with fruits and insects, but her colour palette is more rich in contrast, not least because she usually uses a white cloth as a background for her arrangements. The present work is not listed in the monograph by S. Weiß / H. Paffrath (op. cit.), but several very similar paintings can be found there. The piece combines all the characteristic elements of this painter's works.

Emilie Preyer: Still Life with Grapes, Plaum on a Branch, a Sliced Apricot and Hazelnuts

    Est: €25,000 - €30,000

PREYER, EMILIE Düsseldorf 1849 - 1930 Title: Still Life with Grapes, Plaum on a Branch, a Sliced Apricot and Hazelnuts. A fly on an embroidered damask cloth. Technique: Oil on canvas. Measurement: 17 x 23,5cm. Notation: Signed lower right: Emilie Preyer. Frame/Pedestal: Framed. Provenance: Private ownership, Germany. The Düsseldorf-born artist Emilie Preyer is best known for her detailed fruit still lifes. She shared her preference for this genre with her father, Johann Wilhelm Preyer. As women were not allowed to study art at the Academy of Arts at that time, Emilie Preyer learned painting from her father and his fellow artists in Düsseldorf and for this reason is still considered an unofficial student of the Royal Academy of Arts in Düsseldorf. The present painting shows an arrangement of fruits and nuts executed with meticulous detail. On a table covered with white damask are three plums, already overripe and slightly cracked, with twig and leaves, a few hazelnuts and half a cut apricot already pitted. The arrangement in the background is flanked by light and dark grapes, while in the foreground a fly cautiously approaches the sweet nectar of the fruit, which has already dripped onto the tablecloth. Emilie Preyer's fruit still lifes still inspire their viewers today because of their timelessness. Already in our last FINE ART auctions, we were frequently able to sell very comparable versions of the theme from Emlie Preyer's studio and thus set auction records with works from the Preyer family.

    Emilie Preyer: Fruit Still Life

    Est: €20,000 - €25,000

PREYER, EMILIE Düsseldorf 1849 - 1930 Title: Fruit Still Life. Technique: Oil on canvas. Measurement: 17,5 x 23cm. Notation: Signed lower right: Emilie Preyer. Frame/Pedestal: Framed. Verso: On the stretcher gallery label Kunsthaus Bühler, Stuttgart. Literature: S. Weiß & H. Paffrath (eds.): PREYER. Johann Wilhelm 1803-1889 und Emilie 1849-1930. With the catalogue raisonné of the paintings by Johann Wilhelm and Emilie Preyer, Cologne 2009, p. 174, no. 73. Provenance: Private collection, Germany, acquired from Galerie Paffrath, Düsseldorf. Emilie Preyer's still lifes are supra-temporal in their reduced, concentrated arrangements and their meticulously naturalistic style of depiction. The Düsseldorf artist had studied painting primarily with her father Johann Wilhelm Preyer, but was also allowed to be an unofficial pupil of his professor colleagues at the academy. She inspired throughout her lifetime and to this day with her brilliantly crafted small-format works, which never submitted to modernity. The painting presented here is a very typical work by the painter. On a tabletop aligned parallel to the lower edge of the picture and overlapped by the lateral edges, which is covered with a white damask tablecloth, lies the autumnal harvest: overripe, partly slightly burst plums with twig and leaves, blue and light grapes, half an apricot and two hazelnuts. The harmonious colour effect, the reduced composition in front of the neutral background, accentuated only by the incidence of light, but especially the masterly depiction of the surfaces is fascinating. Emilie Preyer treats the creases and slight compressions of the tablecloth with the same attention as the different degrees of ripeness and surfaces of the fruit and the sweet drops of juice that have attracted a fly. The creator of this feast for the eyes is one of the few women painters who were able to make a living from her painting in the 19th century. Today, her paintings are represented in national and international collections and museums.

Emilie Preyer (German, 1849–1930) Still Life with Peach, Plums, Grapes and Hazelnuts with Fly on a Tablecloth; together with a companion painting Both signed 'Emilie Preyer' bottom right, one also illegibly inscribed, dated '1903' and signed on stretcher verso; pair oils, one on paper laid down to canvas, the other directly on canvas Largest: 7 1/8 x 9 3/4 in. (18.1 x 24.8cm) (2) provenance: David Bendann's, Baltimore, Maryland. Private Collection, Baltimore, Maryland. By descent in the family. Private Collection, South Carolina. NOTE: An important female painter in 19th and early 20th century Germany, Emilie Preyer was an unofficial student of the Düsseldorf Royal Art Academy. She also received training from her father, the well-known still life painter Johann Wilhelm Preyer, a master of the Düsseldorf School of painting. While Emilie's painting is closely tied to her father's work, she is recognized in her own right as a skillfull trompe l'oeil tabletop still life painter. Rendered with great optical fidelity and meticulous detail, Emilie Preyer's still lifes are carefully arranged, typically featuring fruit, sometimes accompanied by champagne, nuts and insects. Each of the present paintings features grapes, peaches, and a fly. Water droplets are also present in each work, and one of the paintings includes plums and hazelnuts. While the fruit is placed atop a marble slab in one of the paintings, and on a tablecloth in the other, the transience of life is apparent in each: in the former painting, the peach in the background is beginning to rot, as noted by the turning color of its skin; in the latter painting, the plum skins have started to split, also indicating that the fruit is past its prime. Preyer's fool-the-eye mastery is clearly on display in each work, not only in terms of the technical proficiency with which the paintings' elements are depicted, but also in terms of her purposeful placement of individual elements over the front edges of the tabletops: a single grape in one painting, and a plum leaf in the other. In so doing, Preyer convincingly breaks the surface of the picture plane, thereby creating a visual foreground which draws the viewer into each finely painted composition. We wish to thank Mr. Hans Paffrath from Galerie Paffrath in Düsseldorf, Germany, for kindly confirming the authenticty of the present works.

Still life with peach and apricots. Oil on canvas. Signed lower left. Provenance: merchant family, Thuringia; since then in private property. Provenienz: Kaufmannsfamilie, Thüringen; seitdem in Privatbesitz. Literatur: Johann Wilhelm und Emilie Preyer - Mit dem Werkverzeichnis der Gemälde von Johann Wilhelm und Emilie Preyer, herausgegeben von Siegfried Weiß und Hans Paffrath Wienand, Köln 2009 (vgl.).
