Jean Louis Prévost Sold at Auction Prices

Flower painter, Landscape painter

Born in the latter part of the 18th century, French artist Jean Louis Prevost has remained among the prominent still life painters since his well-received exhibits at the Academie Royale and the Academy of Saint-Luc. Prevost was associated with Gerard van Spaendonck, a Dutch botanical painter of the same era whose influence can be seen in  Jean Louis Prevost's paintings of plants and flowers. Working mostly with watercolor and oil, Prevost painted with so much detail that his work has often been featured in botanical books circulating in the scientific community.

Some of Prevost's most famous pieces are contained in his Collection des Fleurs et des Fruits, published in 1805. The series of 48 plates featuring flowers and fruit is among the highest valued Jean Louis Prevost paintings and prints, and it was Prevost's hope that the collection would eventually inspire fabric and china patterns. Buyers interested in memorable still life paintings for sale online can find exactly what they're looking for at Invaluable.

  • Prevost Watercolor of Reindeer, Moose and Fallow Deer

Prevost Watercolor of Reindeer, Moose and Fallow Deer

    Est: $10,000 - $15,000

PREVOST, Jean Louis (French, circa 1760-1810). Reindeer, Moose and Fallow Deer. Watercolor on paper. Signed lower right: "Prevost". 6 1/2" x 4" sheet,13 1/2" x 16 1/4" framed. Provenance: Marcel Jeanson, 10 June 2000, lot 211. George Louis LeClerq, Le Comte de Buffon (1707-1788), was keeper of the Jardin du Roi, the royal botanical garden, now the Jardin des Plantes, and museum of zoology. Buffon’s great work, Histoire naturelle, générale et particulière (1749–1804), drawn from the extensive royal wildlife collections, was the first modern attempt to systematically present all existing knowledge in the fields of natural history, geology, and anthropology in a single publication. His contributions were so vast, that Louis XVI commissioned a statue in his honor at the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle in Paris. These exquisite watercolors, commissioned by René-Primevère Lesson (1794-1849), who continued Buffon's earlier work, served as models for the engravings in his Buffon publications. Lesson selected the most noted French natural history painters of his time, including Edouard Travies, Antoine Chazal, Paul-Louis Oudard, Jean-Gabriel Pretre, Jean Louis Prévost, Emile-Theophile Blanchard, and Antoine-Charles Vauthier, for these original watercolors of birds and mammals. Each brilliantly delineated in deeply saturated, intense colors, often heightened with gum Arabic and white, and is so finely drafted that the feathers and fur textures appear highly naturalistic. Each is from the Jeanson collection and mounted with gold borders – displayed royally like the work of their predecessors.

Estimation 35 000 - 45 000 €

Prevost, Folio - Mallow Rose. 4

    Est: $2,000 - $4,000

This beautiful folio stipple engraving is from Jean Louis Prevost's Collection des Fleurs et des Fruits. The work was published in Paris by Vilquin in 1805. It was printed in colors and finished by hand by Ruotte. An exquisite plate from arguably the most beautiful botanical work ever produced, "a work of outstanding importance and interest." Contemporary with the work of Redouté, Collection des Fleurs et des Fruits is one of the earliest examples of stipple engraved and colour-printed botanical illustration. Published in 12 cahiers (or parts) of 4 plates each, the work was compiled to assist designers of porcelain and fabric, with the plates often showing flowers grouped together, usually matched according to their flowering season. The greatest collection of flower books to be sold at auction in the 20th century was the de Belder collection, sold by Sotheby's in 1987. The catalogue was intended as a true reflection of the uniqueness of the collection, and the cover illustration selected to represent the best of the best was an image from Prevost's Collection des Fleurs et des Fruits. Dunthorne describes it as, "a work of outstanding importance and interest...issued for the specific purpose of maintaining the great French tradition for excellence of design and draughtsmanship. Perhaps no other prints are more worthy of carrying on the tradition of Jean Baptiste and van Spaendonck than these fine examples of Prévost. Whether bouquets or sprays of flowers or fruit, they possess a splendour and freshness amounting almost to fragrance, which is largely due to the quality of the colour printing" (Dunthorne, p. 33).

An exquisite plate from arguably the most beautiful botanical work ever produced, "a work of outstanding importance and interest." The full title is: Assiette de Chasselas musque, Muscat noir, Prune-Albert, et Peche admirable. This beautiful folio stipple engraving is from Jean Louis Prevost's Collection des Fleurs et des Fruits. The work was published in Paris by Vilquin in 1805. It was printed in colors and finished by hand by Ruotte. Contemporary with the work of Redouté, Collection des Fleurs et des Fruits is one of the earliest examples of stipple engraved and colour-printed botanical illustration. 1.
