    Gregorio Prestopino (1907-1984). Mixed media including gouache and pencil, Car Study for Finian's Rainbow. Unsigned, Prestopino written in pencil on verso and with paper label on verso "By: Gregorio Prestopino, For: Finian's Rainbow, Car Study, 15 x 22, Dec. 54" and an additional paper label "No. 1". 15" x 22". Unframed. Stored rolled. Scuff marks, small creases and tears along edges and to corners, pin holes upper left and right and lower center. Gregorio Prestopino was hired as an art director for Michael Shore and John Hubley's animated adaptation of the musical Finian's Rainbow. Maurice Binder was brought on to help raise funds for the film. Hubley began work on Finian's Rainbow in 1953, but the film was never made. Production was stopped in 1955 when the project lost its funding, due in part to Hubley's refusal to testify before the House Committee on Un-American Activities. Provenance: From the estate of Maurice Binder. Born in 1918, Maurice Binder was an American film title designer, best known for his work on 14 James Bond films, including Dr. No. He died in 1991 at the age of 72.

    Gregorio Prestopino (American 1907-1984), "Sleeping Infant," silkscreen on rice paper, signed and numbered 41/60, in pencil in bottom margin. Note: Early in his career Prestopino came under the influence of the Ashcan School painters, whose work led him directly to the study of urban life. Provenance: From the Estate of Marilyn "Mickey" Bord, New York, NY. A native New Yorker, Bord formed a deep personal and professional relationship with famed dancer and choreographer Alvin Ailey. Mickey dyed and sewed costumes for the Alvin Ailey Dance Company and eventually served as archivist. Ailey's foundational interest in the African American cultural experience informed the art collection that he assisted Marilyn in acquiring, much of which is offered in this auction. Biography from the Archives of askART Biography photo for Gregorio Prestopino Gregorio Prestopino was born in New York City's Little Italy and attended the National Academy of Design at the age of 14. There he was influenced by the Ashcan painters and their depiction of urban life. In 1934, Prestopino summered at the MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, N.H. and became a director in 1954, which influenced his art. Prestopino's work ranged from the "citizens of Harlem and ending with imaginary creatures inhabiting the landscapes of New Hampshire." Throughout his career he taught painting at the Brooklyn Museum School (1946-51); New School of Social Research (1950-67); and was an artist-in-residence at Michigan State University (1960). 27 1/2"H x 20 1/2"W
