Since he began painting for Spinifex Arts Project in 2014, critical acclaim for his work has grown and he is now included in the collections of all major Australian institutions. As curator Henry F. Skerritt notes: “We have seen an artist pushing the picture plane and using delicate undulations of colour and form to merge and weave the sections of his paintings. As these sliding tectonic plates of colour nudge, they shimmer and slide beneath each other in such unexpected and paradoxical ways that one is often left wondering if it was some kind of magic trick.” Patju Presley paints with such a spiritual confidence, as someone who knows their place in the Creation, often singing the associated songs of particular sites whilst rhythmically placing his myriad of dots. — Spinifex Arts Project This piece is a fine example of an Australian Aboriginal artwork.

     Patju Presley (c.1940-) Untitled 2006

    Est: $3,000 - $4,000

Patju Presley is a senior Pitjantjatjara elder who lives in the remote Western Australian desert. He was born in the 1940s and as a young child lived a nomadic life practicing traditional law, culture, and ceremony. In his youth, Patju spent some time at the Ernabella mission learning to read and write hymns and Bible stories. He trained to be a preacher and still delivers sermons at church services. He is also a strong culture man who practices traditional ceremonial singing and dancing, carves ceremonial and utilitarian objects, and hunts. Patju's images are schematic representations of the epic journeys and creation stories of his country. References to important landforms, rockholes and songlines implicitly evoke the creation ancestors, their interactions and incidents that occurred during the earth's creation. His paintings demonstrate his intimate knowledge of country through intricate details of the changing vegetation, water sources and weather conditions at particular locations. They are heavily loaded with complex symbolic meanings and layered cultural references.
