Other Notes: Peter Prendergast was a Welsh painter whose home country and the landscape it held was a constant force of influence throughout his work - painting the North Welsh quarries and coal mines where he grew up. Born in the North Welsh mining village of Abertridwr, Prendergast's artistic endeavours were encouraged early on by his art teacher Gomer Lewis, and he began to draw the landscape of the surrounding Aber valley and the people and community who lived in his town. After winning a scholarship to Cardiff School of Art in 1961, Prendergast attended the Slade in London, where he was taught by Frank Auerbach, who had a great influence on his work - focussing on the construction and geometry of his drawings rather than expressionism. He won the Nettleship prize for figure drawing at the Slade in 1967. After studying for a Masters at Reading University and taking a teaching post at Liverpool College of Art, Prendergast returned to live in Wales, which he felt was vital to his work. He settled in Bethesda, near Bangor, where he painted the Penrhyn quarry for the next seven years, which reminded him of the coal mines and valleys of his home town, and provided him with constant inspiration. By the early 1980s Prendergast had become an internationally celebrated and successful painter, with his work seen in London, Wales, America and Australia. He exhibited successfully in London with his dealers. Agnew's, won prizes at the 1975 and 1977 National Eisteddfod of Wales and was included in the important Welsh Arts Council 1981 exhibition, 'The Dark Hills and Heavy Clouds'. Prendergast's dedication to his Welsh identity has often drawn parallels with the work of fellow Welsh artist Kyffin Williams, who he met at the Slade.
