    Artist: RENÉ PREJELAN (1877-1968) Size: 55 1/2 x 39 in./141 x 99 cm G. Gerin, Dijon In 1896, Jean-Léon Gérôme unveiled a shocking artwork at the Paris Salon entitled, "Truth Coming From the Well Armed with Her Whip to Chastise Mankind." It became a complete sensation and its aphorism, coined by Democritus, was appropriated and re-interpreted by various French artists over the next couple of years. One, in particular, stands out: "She Will Not Go Back," by Édouard Debat-Ponsan, 1898. In this, Naked Truth holds not a whip but a mirror, shining with reflected light, as she escapes the well and evades members of the clergy, who are attempting to clothe her. It's entirely possible that René Prejelan was inspired by that particular interpretation to create this poster for Cycles Cottereau, a bike manufacturer from 1898 to 1910. Here, Naked Truth beams mirror-reflected light to the Goth-chic woman, who is wearing mourning garb (Prejelan portraying her benighted by ignorance). The light of truth is revealed: "Cycles Cottereau are the best." (Bicycle)
