He is undoubtedly one of our greatest graphic artists and unique typographers, but he did not hesitate to experiment extensively with new techniques and procedures, which are represented here in the form of unique abstract collage. Since his return from a study stay in Paris in 1905, Vojtěch Preissig has been working independently and founding the Czech Graphics edition. In 1909 he published his own book Color Etching and Color Engraving. However, after unsuccessful management of his own graphic workshop, he left Prague in 1910 and left for the USA, where The Art Students League in New York (1912), Teachers College of Columbia University, can be counted among the important locations. It introduces linocut and other special graphic techniques in America for the first time. From 1916 to 1918, he worked as a graphic designer in Boston to lead the large School of Printing and Graphic Arts at the Wentworth Institute. VOJTĚCH PREISSIG 1873 - 1944 - TREES

    Est: -

The focus of Vojtěch Preissig's work was in graphics. The author depicts a tree motif here with a precisely executed aquatint technique, which emphasizes the lyricism of the scenery and gives it a dreamy touch. Vojtěch Preissig studied and developed his skills in graphics during his stay in Paris, where he was able to go thanks to his parents' support as early as 1897. He initially worked for A. Mucha and continued to study graphic techniques with E. Delaun. The very talented Preissig quickly orientated himself in the Parisian environment and acquired his own perfect style of graphic decoration work, in which he soon managed to free himself from the influence of A. Mucha. Technique: Aquatint, paper, Signed: Lower left in the plate "V. Preissig 1906"

    VOJTĚCH PREISSIG 1873 - 1944 - A FLOWERING TREE

    Est: -

Most of Preissig's work is focused on graphics, whose techniques he studied and developed during his stay in Paris - among others in the studio of Karel Schmidt-Rottluff. The Flowering tree represents a lyrical and color-harmonious moment of spring, when the plum tree turns bright pink and the shining sun creates an extraordinarily lovely spectacle. Impressive Art Nouveau graphics dates back to 1905, ie created when Preissig returned to Prague, where he worked mainly as a graphic artist and where he remained until 1910. Technique: Etching, aquatint, paper, Signed: Lower right "Vojt. Preissig 05"

The basis of Preissig’s oeuvre lies in printmaking, which he studied and developed during his residencies in Paris and the United States. After returning from a study residence in Paris in 1905, Vojtěch Preissig worked independently and established the Bohemian Prints edition. In 1909 he published his own book, Barevný lept a barevná rytina (Color Etching and Color Engraving). But when his print workshop went out of business, he left Prague in 1910 and travelled to the United States, where his most important stopovers included The Art Students League of New York (1912) and the Teachers College of Columbia University. It was in the United States where he first saw linocut and other special printmaking techniques. Technique: Etching, paper, Signed: Lower left "Vojt Preissig"

Arts and Crafts of the Homelands. 1919.

    Est: $1,700 - $2,000

ARTIST: VOJTECH PREISSIG (1873-194) SIZE: 25 1/4 x 38 1/8 in./64.2 x 97 cm PRINTER: Wentworth Institute, Boston DESCRIPTION: In 1921, The Poster ran an article titled "Unique Development of Poster Art at Wentworth Institute, Boston: Under Direction of Vojtech Preissig Students Are Taught Poster Designing, Lettering and Printing—Each Artist His Own Craftsman." Preissig, an American artist of Czech descent, had his big break designing and printing recruitment posters during World War I. Of this particular work for an exhibition at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, NY, The Poster wrote, "It bespeaks not only a genuine artistry but a great love and loyalty for the homeland beyond the ocean. Beside a beautifully painted linen chest, filled with art needlework, embroideries, and other products of Bohemian folk-art, sits a quaintly garbed maiden. Wistfully, meditatively she gazes out of the poster, her thoughts far away in the homeland. In designs such as this Mr. Preissig's work manifests unusual delicacy of sentiment and a remarkable sensitiveness to esthetic values." Along with his creative output and faculty impact, there is another notable aspect of Preissig's career: from 1897-1899, he lived in Paris and worked with Alphonse Mucha. Rare! Inscription lower left: “Milovanym rodicum / k 16. a 18. breznu 1899 / Vojtech” [To my dear parents in commemoration of 16 and 18 March 1899 Vojtech] Sticker from Waldes Picture Gallery no. 1678 on back. A young blonde-haired woman looks straight ahead, her left hand lifted to her head, asymmetrically shifted to the left golden ratio. Four stalks of yellow flowers; decorative band of red hearts against a dark background. Night: Signed lower left “Paris 99”, “PV” in the frame outside the picture. Inscription lower right: “Milovanym rodicum / k 16. a 18. breznu 1899 / Vojtech” [To my dear parents in commemoration of 16 and 18 March 1899 Vojtech] Sticker from Waldes Picture Gallery no. 1677 on back. A young black-haired woman looks straight ahead, her right hand raising a stalk of white flowers, asymmetrically shifted to the right golden ratio. Three more stalks of white flowers are decoratively arranged around her. A band of five-point gold stars filled with tiny circles is set against a blue background. The artist dedicated the Day and Night diptych to his parents, as explained in the expert assessment by Prof. PhDr. Petr Wittlich, CSc: “... in gratitude for enabling Preissig to take his dream trip to Paris in 1897, and unquestionably also as an expression of the artistic skill he gained in Paris, where he initially worked under Alphonse Mucha (1898) and continued in the study of printmaking techniques under E. Delaune. It is remarkable how quickly Preissig found his way on the Paris scene and mastered his own perfect style of decorative prints, in which he could free himself from the influence of Alphonse Mucha. Whereas Mucha established his decorative system on three-dimensional lines, Preissig based his on colour fields, thus nearing him to the synthetic tendencies of French modernism as it developed from Gauguin to the Nabis. His enormous sense for colour is also typical for his work, later leading Preissig to the painter’s easel. Both sheets of the diptych are a first-class example of Preissig’s art and confirm his significance as a founding father.” Ref.: Katalog Tschechische Kunst 1878–1914, Auf dem Weg in die Moderne 1985, Mathildehöhe Darmstadt 18. 11. 1984 bis 3. 2. 1985. Condition A / A-: minor creases and abrasions at edges; slight time-staining at lower left edge. Linocut. Paper. The most famous in a series of 16 color linoleum cuts produced by Preissig for the Wentworth Institute during the war, calling on Czechoslovaks living abroad to join the Czech legion fighting in Russia, France and Italy. The posters exist in different languages (Czech, Slovak and English) and formats (the images also appear on postcards). A Czech artist, Preissig studied at the School of Applied Arts in Prague and worked with Alphonse Mucha in Paris between 1898 and 1903. In 1910, he came to America, where he taught at Columbia University and was the director of the School of Printing and Graphic Arts at the Wentworth Institute in Boston (whose initials are printed on the poster). The flags depicted in this poster represent the four regions which would, in 1918, comprise Czechoslovakia: Bohemia (the red lion); Moravia (the red and white checked eagle); Silesia (the black eagle); and Slovakia (with the Slovak double cross, similar to the French cross of Lorraine). The red, white and blue flag, with the stars in the middle, was the Resistance flag of the Czechoslovak Independence movement that Preissig had designed for the Czech Government while in Exile. It was supposed to become the Czech national flag, but was somehow overlooked in 1918 when Czechoslovakia was officially formed. Rawls p. 65, Darracott 38, Borkan p. 46, Theofiles 19, Rickards 78, Preissig p. 155 and 159 (both var).

PROPORTIONS. 1922. A study of proportions examining the connection between colors, geometric shapes, lines and space. After a period when Preissig created his best known artworks in the Art Nouveau style, he moved to the US, where he concentrated himself mostly on abstract compositions and typography. This interest of him persisted even after his return to Prague in 1931. He continued to monitor the connections between basic concepts such as man and nature, the relations of things etc. which were depicted by using experimental graphic techniques. Watercolor and pencil on paper, 170x170 mm (mount aperture), signed lower left in pencil by initials „PV“, marked upper right „Proportion“. Collector’s stamp of Waldes Gallery with inventory number on the reverse, as well as the same thing from National Gallery in Prague and stamp from an exhibition in Topič Salon (2014). Mounted, framed, glazed. PROPORCE. 1922. Studie proporcí zkoumající vztahy barev a geometrických tvarů, linie a prostoru. číslem, totéž z Národní galerie v Praze a razítko z výstavy v Topičově salonu (2014). Paspartováno, rámováno, zaskleno. PROPORTIONEN. 1922. Passepartout, gerahmt, verglast.

Condition A-: minor abrasions in lower left corner; minor creases and time-staining at edges. Paper. The Wentworth Institute, in Boston, was a premier graphic art center in its day. Vojtech Preissig was a Czechoslovak who came to America and directed the institute between 1916 and 1924. During World War I the institute published a series of linoleum cut posters that Preissig designed. Mostly they were World War I propaganda, calling on Czechoslovaks living abroad to join the fight. By all previous accounts there were only 16 images in the series. This previously undocumented image is listed as number 18, and is one of the rare non-militaristic poster images produced during his American sojourn. All the other images in the series were also reproduced as post cards; it is not known if this image was.
