  • FRANCISCO PRECIADO DE LA VEGA - Immaculate Conception

FRANCISCO PRECIADO DE LA VEGA - Immaculate Conception

    Est: -

FRANCISCO PRECIADO DE LA VEGA Seville 1712 - Rome 1789 Immaculate Conception. c. 1760 Oil on copper Apocryphal on the back: Maella Measurements 38 x 25 cm It is an Immaculate Conception whose signature, which reads Maella, can confuse those who contemplate it. Indeed, the atmosphere between Maella (1739-1819) and Preciado de la Vega is close, perhaps because both their training in Rome and their clientele were, in a way, very similar. However, observing the painting carefully, we see how its aesthetics reveals that we are dealing with a copper painted in the middle of the Baroque, and not late in the second half of the 19th century, when the bulk of the production of the Valencian painter is dated. . Francisco Preciado de la Vega became King Charles III's chamber painter, although much of his production took place in Rome, where he settled in 1732, being a member of the Academy of San Lucas. However, his career as a painter in the city of the Tiber was, above all, linked to the Spanish diplomatic representation and religious institutions, which confirms that both his prestige and projection were modest, partly due to having to deal with an artistic environment very competitive. In this work, the Sevillian painter demonstrates his perfect iconographic knowledge, representing the Virgin with her arms outstretched towards the Creator, in a way that is very close to the usual representations of the subject made by his teacher Sebastiano Conca and, therefore, far from the mystical feeling that Preciado provides in other of his versions, such as the case of the Immaculate Conception preserved in the Church of the Holy Trinity of the Spanish on Via Condotti in Rome, which the painter executed in 1750 and which marks the arch chronological of his best production. Comparing both works, one appreciates the stylistic diversity that the Sevillian painter is capable of facing depending on the commission. While the Immaculate of the Church of the Holy Trinity of the Spanish is a much more classicist work due to the public place where it is exhibited, this work is much more baroque, a good example of how Preciado had been trained in the Roman barocchetto and late-baroque, in that eclecticism that predominated in the Rome of the seven hundred, where he presents his best works. The putti and cherubs will end up being one of the most characteristic resources of this painter. In this case, the cherubs on the upper part of the copper are typical of the forms that Preciado develops from the sixties, which allows us not only to attribute the work to the Sevillian painter, but also to date it within that time frame. .
