Oil on canvas Austria, 1930s Josef Prantl (1901-1992) - Austrian painter, lithographer and illustrator Signed lower right 'Jos Prantl' Dimensions: 62 x 80 cm Very good condition The Austrian painter Josef Prantl is known for his atmospheric landscapes and floral still lifes. The present mountain range is characterized by intensive colours and elaborate light and dark effects This atmospheric view of the Alps by the Austrian painter Josef Prantl dates to the 1930s. The impressing mountain range is presented underneath a bright blue sky. The left part of the painting shows a glacier tongue, carving its way through sharp crests. It is highly likely that the painting depicts the 'Gaisbergferner', a valley glacier in the Ötztal Alps in Tirol. The special charm of this oil painting is based on the light and dark contrasts, as well as on the intense colours, applied on the canvas with a powerful impasto brushwork. Like his contemporary and compatriot Alfons Walde, Prantl succeeded in portraying with great verve the contrast between hard rocks and soft snow in a sculptural manner. The painting is signed lower right 'Jos Prantl'. It is in very good condition, with only minimal signs of age. The colour surface shows slight craquelure. Under UV-light two touch-ups in the area of the sky are visible. The dimensions of the painting are 62 x 80 cm. Josef Prantl (1901-1992) Josef Prantl worked as history, still life and portrait painter as well as lithographer and illustrator. Born in Innsbruck, he attended the local trade school and then studied from 1926 to 1927 at the Munich Academy with Adolf Schinnerer and Franz von Stuck. He is famous for his facade paintings, which he painted in Seefeld, Leutasch, Kematen, and Hötting. In 1932, his works were shown in a solo exhibition at the Innsbruck Ferdinandeum and in 1951, he exhibited in the Vienna Künslterhaus.
