PRANG'S CIVIL WAR CHROMOLITHOGRAPHS. PRANG, LOUIS. 1824-1909. [Civil War Pictures]. Boston: L. Prang & Co, 1886-1888. 18 chromolithographs after Thulstrup or Davidson, each 384 x 548 mm (image size), full margins, titled in lower margin, each matted under archival plastic in card, bright and clean, all housed in cloth clamshell box, morocco title label to upper cover. Provenance: Ex-libris Michael Sharpe (morocco bookplate to inside front cover of box). COMPLETE SET OF PRANG'S RARE CIVIL WAR SERIES OF CHROMOLITHOGRAPHS. 'Each picture is a combination of over 300 colors and shades ... the flags and uniforms of the officers and troops are vividly reproduced, the fire and smoke of battle graphically portrayed, and all the surrounding represented in colors of nature and of actual war' (from Prang's prospectus). Prang's work with Winslow Homer during the Civil War had jump started his career, and his printmaking fame had been solidified with his epic 1876 portfolio of Thomas Moran's paintings of Yellowstone Park. By the 1880s he was widely considered the greatest American printmaker of the post-Civil War era, and this series one of his masterpieces. 'These Prang Civil War lithographs are some of the most interesting pictures of the Civil War. They have been neglected for so many years that there are not a great number in circulation and these are not usually found in good condition...' (McClinton, The Chromolithographs of Louis Prang p 151). See also Holzer, Prang's Civil War Pictures: The Complete Battle Chromos of Louis Prang, Fordham, 2001.
