    Joseph Powell (1780-1834) - A Series of Views of the Town of Bridgnorth and Village of Quatford, drawn for Mr J. Smalman, in 1828, 1829, 1830, by J. Powell Esq. President of the Association of Painters in Water Colours, 26 finely executed watercolours, including one mounted on a manuscript sheet titled Pedigree of the Smalman Family of Kinnersley Castle, Co. Hereford , 18 signed, 4 signed and dated, v.s., 6 x 9 cm (2 3/8 x 3 1/2 in) to 9.5 x 14 cm (3 3/4 x 5 1/2 in), all mounted on neatly ruled and captioned modern album leaves, manuscript title panel similarly mounted, contemporary blue straight-grain morocco, stamped in gilt and blind, rebacked preserving original gilt spine, preserved in modern blue morocco-edged cloth slip-case, 4to John Smalman was an architect and mayor of Bridgnorth, who built and lived in Quatford Castle. The family had previously lived at Kinnersley Castle, Herefordshire, until the civil war. Quatford had been an important crossing point of the River Severn until the building of a bridge to its north, which developed into the larger town of Bridgnorth. Joseph Powell, artist, printmaker and pupil of Benjamin Thomas Pouncy, was born and lived in London all his life. He frequently painted topographical watercolours in Shropshire and, in 1831, became the first president of the New Society of Painters in Water Colours.
