VICENTE POVEDA Y JUAN (Alicante 1857 - Rome, 1935). "Male portrait". Watercolor on paper. Signed in the lower right corner and located in Rome. Measurements: 31 x 22, 5 cm; 46 x 37 cm (frame). Scene of interior where a man is portrayed reading pleasantly. His posture, on a chair, is relaxed in excess in such a way that it seems that the spectator enters in a furtive way in this sumptuous interior. This genre of paintings, called "de casacones", was one of the most demanded by the public during the 19th century. They were genre scenes set in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and their name comes from the jackets worn by the male protagonists. Vicente Poveda began his training in his hometown. Although he later received a scholarship to study at the Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid. He later moved to Rome to continue his academic training. It was there where he began to form part of the circle of artists such as Vicente March, Pedro Serrano, Gabriel Puig Roda and Manuel Muñoz. From that moment on he established his studio in Rome, where he developed his entire career.

    Est: $1,000 - $2,000

Medium: WC/P Support: Board Artist: Vicente Poveda Y Juan Artist Dates: 1857-1935 Country of Origin: Spain Title & Description: The PreacherThis piece portrays a man of the cloth wearing a white cap and a red robe with a dark sash over his left shoulder. The man's eyes are closed as he gestures outward, presumably toward the gathered clergy, with a single raised finger. His mouth is loosely open, as though mid speech. The background is dark and vague, as though this man is the sole occupant of the space he resides in and - as his eyes are closed - perhaps he is the only person he deems worthy of holding his space. Signature: V. Poveda / Roma Date of Work: Late 19th C. Frame: Gilt wood Work Size: 8.75x13.75" Frame Size: 17.27x21.25" Weight: 3.2lbs Provenance: Connecticut Estate Condition: This piece is well preserved in its frame, no sign of wear or repair done to it.Meta: Religious, Clergy, Watercolor Artist Biography: A disciple of Federico Madrazo in Madrid, Poveda lived off a grant from the Council of Alicante. In 1882 he boarded in Rome with the same grant. His work, "Valley of Tears," achieved a third place medal in the Nationals of 1884, which he created while in Rome. A year later he won the same medal with his piece "The Death of the Prince of Viana." Three years later he settled in Rome, attending drawing classes and learning the Watman technique for watercolor on paper. Later he would travel to Vienna, Munich, London, and St. Petersburg to further his studies. In Italy he spent long periods in Venice to pain the views the city offered, most especially those of the internal patios. He died in 1832, closely tied to the Vatican.
