  • LÉON POURTAU (French 1868-1898) A PAINTING, "Still Life with Fruit and Picture Book," LATE 19TH CENTURY,
    Oct. 01, 2022

LÉON POURTAU (French 1868-1898) A PAINTING, "Still Life with Fruit and Picture Book," LATE 19TH CENTURY,

    Est: $6,000 - $8,000

LÉON POURTAU (French 1868-1898) A PAINTING, "Still Life with Fruit and Picture Book," LATE 19TH CENTURY, oil on canvas, signed L/L, "L. Pourtau;" 11 1/2'' x 17 1/2'', framed 18'' x 24''. Note: Léon Pourtau was a musician and painter whose career was tragically cut short. Originally from Bourdeaux, he got his start working for a circus and playing clarinet in a cafe-chantant. His musical gifts were recognized early and at age 22 he became the youngest ever professor at the Conservatoire de Lyon. Through his interest in music, he met the artist Georges Seurat who was also a musician. They became friends and Seurat taught him painting techniques in the post-impressionist and pointilist styles. Pourtau joined a concert group and toured in the US for two years, but he continued to paint. He had his first and only showing at the annual exhibition of painting in Philadelphia in the winter of 1896-1897. In 1898 he decide to return to France and set sail on the SS La Bourgogne headed for Le Havre. His ship collided with a British ship in the fog off the coast of Nova Scotia and sank on July 4, 1898. Pourtau was lost at sea and the world lost a young and talented artist.

Oil on canvas France, 1893 Léon Pourtau (1868-1898) - French Painter Monogrammed and dated lower right ‘LP 93’ The authenticity of this work has been confirmed on July 25th 2000 by Gabriel Vallad (copy of the expertise of authenticity, the original expertise will be delivered to the buyer) Dimensions: 38 x 46 cm Framed: 55 x 62 cm Good condition Provenance: Private Collection, Israel Late impressionist landscape composition with sailboats at sunset, distinguished by the pointillist style of Seurat; the auction record for a painting by the artist is currently set around €574.000 Estimate by Auctionata Expert: 50,000 Euro This work clearly shows Leon Pourtau’s admiration for the painter Georges Seurat (1959 - 1891), whose pointillist style he adapts in his paintings. Countless small splashes of color are closely set side by side, creating a flickering effect of colorful light in the eye of the beholder, which is further emphasized by the setting sun. Condition: The painting is in good condition. Scattered, small touch-ups at the top and bottom of the screen visible under UV-light, one correspondingly backed on the reverse. Selective tiny color chipping in the margins on the right and bottom center. Otherwise generally of very good impression. The image dimensions are 38 x 46 cm, the framed dimensions 55 x 62 cm. Léon Pourtau (1868-1898) Little is known about the life of Léon Pourtaus. He was born in 1868 or around 1872 in France. He has worked as a musician and was active at the Conservatoire de Lyon. He further spent some time in the United States, where he was engaged with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Before his 30th birthday, he lost his life on the shipwreck of SS La Bourgogne in the Atlantic in 1898. His works are considerably influenced by the neo-impressionist movements. • Pourtau, Léon: Soleil couchant (Sonnenuntergang)
    Nov. 30, 2013

    Pourtau, Léon: Soleil couchant (Sonnenuntergang)

    Est: €30,000 - €40,000

Soleil couchant (Sonnenuntergang). Öl auf Leinwand. 38 x 46 cm. Provenienz: Privatsammlung Israel

Provenance Frédéric Luce (the artist's son); Sotheby's London, Impressionist and Modern Paintings and Sculpture, Part II, 29 June 1988, lot 123 Exhibition London 1995 (Royal Academy of Arts), From Manet to Gauguin. The artist's mother-in-law Madame Vallad is shown here, occupied with sewing chores. She sits with her sewing basket in the light of a large window and is entirely focussed upon her work. The window provides a view over a town in early spring, bathed in gleaming bright light. Within the dark interior, the sunlight is picked up and reflected by the white pieces of laundry, the upper right side of the sitter and her slightly raised hands. Léon Pourtau, who made this painting when he was just 18 years old, learnt and adopted the pointillist style from his friend Georges Seurat, the founder of Pointillism. In this technique, pure colours are applied as dots next to each other. According to optical principles, the blending and melding of these colours to graduated shades of colour takes place in the eyes of the viewer. The "Portrait de Madame Vallad" shows that this technique is not only suited to capturing the abundance of shimmering light in open landscapes, but also to render the differentiated light conditions and atmosphere of an interior with areas of more modest and darker tones. Au th‚ƒtre signed with initals 'L.P.' (lower right); signed, dated and stamped with signature 'L. Pourtau 94' (on the reverse) oil on panel 10 1/8 x 13 3/8 in. (25.7 x 34 cm.) PROVENANCE Gabriel Vallad (the artist's great-nephew). Anon. sale, Sotheby's, London, 22 February 1989, lot 1. Acquired at the above sale by the present owner. NOTES Pourtau was a muscian by profession and working towards a career as an artist in 1894 when the present work was painted. Largely self-taught, he adopted the principles and techniques of the Pointillists through his friendship and association with Georges Seurat. Pourtau left France in 1895 for Philadelphia to work as a musician. Upon his return to France, the artist was tragically killed at sea. Ironically, what remains most prominent in his concise oeuvre are seascapes imbued with warm colors and paysages of the French countryside.
