Very fine oil on masonite painting by well listed American artist Edward Henry Potthast ( 1857-1927). Framed. Signed. Size: 13 3/4" x 10 5/8" Framed; 8 1/2" x 5 1/2" Unframed. Provenance: Private art collection Denver, Colorado. Edward Henry Potthast (1857 - 1927) was active/lived in New York, Ohio. Edward Potthast is known for shorescape genre and landscape painting, illustrations. Edward H. Potthast studied intermittently at the McMicken School of Design between 1869 and 1887. He also worked as a lithography apprentice before traveling to Munich and Paris. When he returned to America he settled in NYC and worked as an illustrator for "Harper's" and "Scribner's". • Edward Henry Potthast Gloucester Harbor Painting

Edward Henry Potthast Gloucester Harbor Painting

    Est: $10,000 - $15,000

Title is In Gloucester Harbor. Oil on Board. Has the original gallery label on back with address as 222 W. 59th St New York. 8" by 10" unframed. 9" by 11 1/2" framed. Provenance: Vermont Estate through descent, purchased directly from the artist. Edward Henry Potthast (1857 - 1927) was active/lived in New York, Ohio. Edward Potthast is known for Shorescape genre and landscape painting, illustrations. A painter most remembered most for his beach scenes of carefree atmosphere, Edward Potthast was one of the significant 19th-century American artists from Cincinnati, which at the time of his birth was a burgeoning art center and a place of refuge for German immigrants including the Potthast family. He first studied at the McMicken School of Design and at the Cincinnati Academy, and then went to Europe briefly before becoming established in his native city as a lithographer and illustrator. In 1892, he moved to New York City where he won the Clarke Prize at the National Academy of Design and many other honors. In 1910, he was part of a Santa Fe Railroad sponsored trip to the Grand Canyon that included Thomas Moran. The group spent ten days painting on the South Rim of the Canyon, and this experience was so stimulating to him that he returned to the West several times, developing a tonalist style of painting night scenes. Apparently he also traveled to California, as several of his paintings are of Catalina Island according to the book The Enchanted Isle and verified by a resident of Catalina. His studio was primarily in New York City, but in 1912, he spent extensive time in Europe where he enrolled in Academies in Munich, Antwerp and Paris. He divided his time between illustrations for Harper's" and Scribner's magazines but later gave up illustration for full time fine art. He was an exceedingly private person who died at his easel.

Edward Henry Potthast’s Western Masterpiece With staggeringly bold forms and brilliant hues, Edward Potthast’s Grand Canyon is a testament to the profound influence of westward travel on American artists in the twentieth century. Inthis work one can see through the eyes of the painter the breathtaking experience of viewing thisdramatic vista, unrivaled in its sheer scale and monumental beauty. This experience would indeedprove life-altering for Potthast, whose commitment to the Southwest would endure throughout hiscareer as he continued to travel there to paint the Canyon, and also to forge a community of artistssimilarly inspired by its magnificence. At the outset of the twentieth century, was a brand new railline extending all the way to the very edge of the Grand Canyon, the Santa Fe Railway had an entirecountry to convince to travel westward. Having come dangerously close to bankruptcy in the late1880s, railway executives began to study the possibilities of creating an advertising campaign thatwould invite artists to travel there at the Railroad’s expense in exchange for the right to reproducetheir paintings in advertisements for the line. In earlier years, it had been a lengthy and gruelingjourney to send artists to the Grand Canyon to promote tourism. However, with the new line directtravel to the Canyon was finally possible, and in 1901 the first locomotive took passengers all theway to the south rim. In November of 1910, in an effort to transform the image of the Santa Fe Railway and tostimulate tourism to the Southwest, Ohio-born Potthast, along with four other prominent artists, was invited by the Railway to journey to the Grand Canyon to recreate on canvas the unique experience of its landscape. It has been written that the five artists, Thomas Moran, Elliott Daingerfield,Frederick B. Williams, De Witt Parshall, and Potthast, all from very different schools of painting, were led to the edge of the canyon with their eyes closed so that they may be awed by the panorama in its entirety, and indeed, they were overwhelmed by its magnificence. This would be the first visit to the Grand Canyon for Potthast, who out of the group wouldbe particularly moved by the experience. Indeed, in the present work one can see the artist’s confident handling and impressionistic color. In addition, Potthast celebrates the awe-inspiring expanseand sublime scale of the Canyon by creating a marvelous depth in his composition. The sun breaksgloriously through the menacing gray skies and the rainbow emerges as a beacon of hope and promise, signaling nature as a moral force, and manifesting romantic associations common among viewers of the Western landscape at the time. Potthast would go on to exhibit his depictions of the Grand Canyon at the National Academy in 1911, 1918, and 1920. It has been speculated by Dr. John Wilson that the present painting may have been the work that Potthast exhibited at the Academy in 1918. (J. Wilson, EdwardHenry Potthast: American Impressionist, exhibition catalogue, New York, 1998, p.14) Potthast’s devotion to the Southwest would also lead him to become a founder of a group called the Society of Men Who Paint the West, which included several of the artists who accompanied Potthast on the 1910 painting excursion.

Catalogue note: Born in Cincinnati, Edward Henry Potthast studied painting in his home city, Munich and Paris before moving to New York in 1896. He quickly gained recognition for his beach landscapes, depicting mainly women and children frolicking on the shores of New York and New England. His achievements included winning the National Academy's prestigious Clarke prize, serving as director of the American Water Color Society, and being one of five artists selected by the Santa Fe Railway to paint the Grand Canyon in 1910, alongside Thomas Moran, Elliott Daingerfield, Frederick Ballard Williams and De Witt Parshall. Arlene Jacobowitz, former associate curator of the Brooklyn Museum of Art, wrote in 1967: "Throughout his lifetime, Potthast concentrated on the cheerful, pleasant side of life. His legacy is a tribute to the carefree atmosphere of the seashore: happy children rollicking about, splashing in the surf; young mothers with children in their arms or beside their breeze-blown skirts, gossiping or strolling the beach; and family groups, picnicking, sunning themselves, and chatting merrily on the sand beside gaily colored beach umbrellas. The combinations of these themes were inexhaustible, and Potthast never tired of new variations."

    Impressionist Landscape by Edward Potthast

    Est: $5,000 - $8,000

Edward Henry Potthast (American/Cincinnati, 1857-1927). Oil on canvas, signed l.r., and with exhibition label to verso. An large example of the Cincinnati native's landscape painting, with a figure and cattle at the shore of a river. Potthast was regarded as a seminal American Impressionist, especially with his depictions of Coney Island, and leisurely beach subjects that were indicative of turn-of-the-century recreational activity during the Industrial Age. 23.25" x 29.75" (sight), 34.5" x 40.5" (framed). Conservation report from 1983 included. Provenance: Descended through the family of Richard Knight LeBlond, founder of the R. K. LeBlond Machine Tool Company in Cincinnati, Ohio, a manufacturer metal cutting lathes. The Madison and Edwards Road plant of The R.K. Le Blond Machine Tool Company (in service 1918-1989) is an example of the early 20th century "factory beautiful" movement in American industry. At this location a prominent Cincinnati area manufacturer of machine tools established itself as the industry's foremost producer of lathes, and through mid-century dominated the world market for specialized lathes for the machining of engine crankshafts and for gun boring. The impact of this manufacturing plant on 20th century culture has been significant both during peacetime (when virtually all moving vehicles from American Autmobiles to Soviet tractors were powered by engines with crankshafts made on Le Blond lathes) and during wartime when opponents in two world wars fired upon each other using ordinance of every size that had been bored and rifled on Le Blond equipment). Locally, the plant had significance as a major industrial employer during an era that spanned the Great Depression. (Library of Congress)
