JUNGE FRAU MIT WASSERPFEIFE Öl auf Leinwand. 135 x 76 cm. Rechts unten seitlich signiert. In Goldrahmen mit Künstlernamensschild. Postiglione stammte aus einer Künstlerfamilie und studierte bei seinem Onkel Rafaele Postiglione (1818-1897) sowie bei Domenico Morelli (1823-1901). 1883 stellte er in Rom ein Gemälde religiösen Themas aus, 1881 in Turin war er mit einem Historiengemälde vertreten und 1887 in Venedig mit einem Heiligenbild sowie mit einem Portrait seines Meisters. Im öffentlichen Raum schuf er das Fresko in der Halle des Palazzo della Borsa in Neapel sowie im Castello Miramare in Triest. Bekannt geworden ist der Maler nicht zuletzt durch die Frauendarstellungen der eleganten Welt. Das Gemälde betont hochformatig, die Malweise in der bekannt hohen Qualität des Künstlers. Die junge Dame in leicht tänzerischer Haltung, im Dreiviertelbildnis wiedergegeben. Die Drehung des Körpers vermittelt Leichtigkeit, eine Tanzbewegung zum Ausdruck bringend. Der Kopf leicht zur Seite geneigt, der Blick lächelnd dem Betrachter entgegengerichtet. Im hochgesteckten Haar im Sinne orientalistischer Fantasiemode Schmuckketten und lange Nadeln eingebracht. Das smaragdgrüne Kleid an der Brust mit einem hellen durchsichtigen grauen Schleier umzogen. Dieses vermittelt gemeinsam mit dem Hintergrund eine insgesamt grünliche Farbharmonie, durch die das hell beleuchtete Inkarnat sowie ein rosafarbenes Seidentuch als Komplementärkontrast zur Wirkung kommen. In der linken Hand hält sie einen großen Pfauenfederfächer. Rechts steigt aus einer gläsernen Wasserpfeife feiner Rauch auf, der den Raumhintergrund verunklärt. So ist das Gemälde als Ausdruck des im ausgehenden 19. Jahrhunderts aufkommenden Interesses für orientalische Sujets zu verstehen, auch den Gesellschaftsveranstaltungen entsprechend, in denen nicht selten orientalische Kostüme zum Einsatz kamen. Napoli 1861 - 1906 Ritratto di giovane Firmato S Postiglione in basso a sinistra Olio su tela, cm 51X41 Postiglione inizia la sua carriera seguendo le lezioni di Domenico Morelli, di Stanislao Lista, Gioacchino Toma e Filippo Palizzi. Nel 1890 con il gruppo del Gambrinus, Filippo Palizzi e Saverio Altamura entra a far parte del Circolo Artistico Politecnico di Napoli ed undici anni dopo è nominato direttore della Scuola di Pittura di Modena, posto che manterrà fino al 1904. La tradizione del verismo napoletano, nella quale si inserisce l'opera dell'artista, partiva dalla Scuola di Posillipo, passando per il calligrafismo del Palizzi e arrivava alla Scuola di Resina negli anni Settanta. Successivamente alla presenza di Mariano Fortuny a Napoli, le tavolozze dei pittori della Scuola Napoletana si arricchiscono di toni chiari e luminosi. Le tele si riempiono di ritratti e paesaggi dominati dalla luce partenopea e da una pennellata virtuosa e movimentata. Salvatore Postiglione praticì, con successo e originalità, vari generi pittorici, come il ritratto, con particolare predilezione per la figura femminile, il paesaggio e le scene popolari. Affrescì, inoltre, il castello di Miramare a Trieste e il salone del Palazzo De Riseis, il Palazzo della Borsa a Napoli, così come il Gambrinus, insieme agli altri artisti che lo frequentavano.

DANTE UND BEATRICE Öl auf Leinwand. 101 x 150 cm. Rechts unten signiert "Sal. Postiglione". Dargestellt ist die Begegnung Dantes mit Beatrice in einer üppigen, blühenden Landschaft bei Sonnenuntergang. Links ist die schöne Beatrice zu sehen, die ihre Füße in einen kleinen Flusses im Vordergrund gesetzt hat. Ihr Obergewand und die Schuhe sind abgelegt und liegen links am Ufer. Der lange, weiße, teils transparente Stoff ihres Unterkleides umspielt ihre elegante Gestalt. Sie wendet sich verschämt nach links und sucht ihr entblößtes Dekolleté zu bedecken. Der jugendliche Dante steht rechts im Bild und wendet sich in ihre Richtung. Er trägt sein charakteristisches rotes Gewand im gotischen Stil, einen Lorbeerkranz, der ihn als Dichter ausweist, und hält ein Buch. Seine Gestalt wird leicht verdeckt durch hervorragende Äste eines Baumes. Dieser dunkle Baum in Zentrum des Bildes grenzt die beiden Personen kompositorisch voneinander ab, indem er ein Art Schranke formt. Diese Trennung kann jedoch zugleich als Symbol für Dantes unerfüllte Liebe zu Beatrice gesehen werden. Das Gewässer ist der Fluss Lethe, in dem Dante seine Sünden vergessen soll. Die literarische Grundlage für das Gemälde liefert eine Episode Dantes "Il Purgatorio", in der Beatrice ihn auf der Suche nach Transzendenz leitet. Feine Malweise, mit delikater Ausarbeitung sämtlicher Details. Rest.(8923735) Anmerkung: Das Sujet ist dem pre-raphaelitischen Themenkreis der Suche nach spiritueller Liebe entlehnt. Das Thema schildert auch John William Waterhouse in seinem Gemälde von 1915, heute im Dahesh Museum of Art Greenwich, Connecticut.

Oil on canvas, signed in the lower left corner, approx. 30-1/2" x 23", framed in a gilt frame with carved corner ornaments overall approx. 36-1/2" x 30". There appears to have been some inscriptions on the verso of the canvas that have been obscured by moisture.: Uneven surface, crazing pigments, large unfinished repair in background, unfinished repair on the child's elbow and on the man's shoulder, some other pigment small losses and older inpainting.
