Signed and dated lower right: E. W. Pose 1856 Eduard Wilhelm Pose was among the most well-known landscape painters of the Düsseldorf School. At the Düsseldorf Academy, he was a pupil of Schirmer and a friend of Carl Friedrich Lessing and Andreas Achenbach. With the latter he left the academy in 1836 and moved to Munich, where he worked under Carl Rottmann. Pose soon succeeded in taking part in international exhibitions, including one in Brussels in 1839. King Leopold I of Belgium bought one of his paintings on that occasion. From his Frankfurt period, which began in 1845 with his move to the city on the Main, it was above all his private connection with Gustave Courbet that attracted attention. Courbet's magnificent painting "Dame de Francfort", today in the Wallraff-Richartz Museum in Cologne, is said to depict Pauline, Eduard Pose's wife. There is some evidence for an alleged love affair between Courbet and Pauline Pose.

Pose [...]" sowie ein weiteres Etikett bezeichnet "Freiburg". Um 1842. Boetticher erwähnt, dass Pose das Gemälde „Königsee in Berchtesgaden“, das im Besitz des Großherzoges Ludwig II. von Hessen war, 1842 im Städelschen Institut in Frankfurt am Main ausstellte. Description: Pose is one of the most important landscape painters of the Düsseldorf school of painting. He carefully prepared his paintings by numerous studies and cultivated a landscape art composed with light effects, oriented on Schirmer and Lessing. His oil studies are mostly neither signed nor inscribed. This study, painted with a loose brush stroke in front of the landscape, can be attributed to the painter's late work.

Schlossruine an einem See, im Vordergrund zwei heimkehrende Jäger. Feder in Grau und Aquarell, auf bräunlichem Papier. 31 x 35 cm. Unten links monogrammiert und datiert "EWP Nov. 1834". Nach anfänglichen Studien bei seinem Vater, dem Dekorationsmaler Ludwig Pose, schloss sich der Künstler der neu eingerichteten Landschaftsklasse an der Düsseldorfer Akademie an. Dort unterrichtete ab 1831 Johann Wilhelm Schirmer, Carl Friedrich Lessing und Friedrich Wilhelm von Schadow und übten auf Pose einen nachhaltigen Einfluss aus. Entsprechend folgt der Künstler in seiner Auffassung der Landschaft weniger der Tradition der Romantik, sondern zeigt sich eher von der realistischen Strömung der Düsseldorfer Schule geprägt. - Etwas gebräunt.

Der Maler Eduard Wilhelm Pose gehörte seit 1832-33 der Landschaftsklasse Johann Wilhelm Schirmers an der Düsseldorfer Akademie an. Einige Jahre später (1836) ging er als Mitarbeiter Carl Rottmanns nach München, wo er sich an dem Zyklus griechischer Landschaften beteiligte. Im "Lexikon der Düsseldorfer Malerschule" wird Pose wie folgt gewürdigt "Seine Gemälde bereitete er sorgfältig vor, strebte aber niemals vedutenhafte Treue an, sondern - in der Nachfolge Schirmers und Lessings - eine mit Lichteffekten komponierte Landschaftskunst, die realistisch und naturnah sein sollte und ohne die gedanklichen Assoziationen des Idealismus auskam...".
