A pair of patinated lead figures of Jupiter and Venus Amphitrite, Walter Pompe (1703-1777), second half of the 18 th century Walter Pompe est considéré comme l’un des derniers représentants de la sculpture anversoise du XVIIIe siècle. Il se forme à partir de 1722 dans l’atelier de Michiel van der Voort l’Ancien (1667-1737), avant de devenir maître sculpteur de la guilde de Saint-Luc en 1730 à Anvers. Il est principalement reconnu pour sa production d’œuvres religieuses, mais également pour des commandes privées qu’il réalise à l’aide de son atelier florissant Anversois. Les sculptures profanes représentent principalement des sujets mythologiques et allégoriques, comme Vénus et Jupiter ici présents. On retrouve des sculptures de Pompe dans des institutions prestigieuses, notamment au Musée du Louvre qui possède deux terres cuites : un Saint Sébastien datant de 1740 (inv. n° RF 1694), ainsi que le Combat d’un lion et d’un serpent de 1759 (inv. n° RF 2007-10).

A boxwood figure of one of the wise virgins, attributed to Walther Pompe

This standing female figure presumably originally held an oil lamp as an attribute in her right hand, marking her out as a figure from a group representing the “Wise and Foolish Virgins”. The piece is signed and dated “Anv. (.) Pompe f. 1769.” on the reverse. This finely sculpted work may have been produced by Walther Pompe, who was one of the most influential sculptors in Flanders and was active as of around 1730. However, if the first initial in the signature is meant to be read as a “J”, then the work's author may have been Walther Pompe's equally talented son and pupil Jan Engelbert Pompe (1743-1810).

A terracotta figure of Saint Anthony by Walther Pompe

This depiction of a standing bearded monk holding an open book in his left hand is labelled in a barely legible inscription on the front of the plinth “S. Antoines apt”, which identifies it as a depiction of Saint Anthony. The plinth is dated “1748” and bears the conjoined monogram “WP”. It is a characteristic work by the influential Flemish sculptor Walter Pompe, who produced numerous fine works in ivory, boxwood, terracotta and marble in his workshop in Antwerp as of 1730.

(several brown stains). - Walter Pompe (1703-1777) was a Flemish master-sculptor, known for his religious works in wood. He was a student of Michiel Van de Voort, from Antwerp. Often he designed Baroque interiors for important churches such as the high altar of St Peter's church in Turnhout and the statues of the City Hall of Middelburg. Our drawing is very similar to a group of sculpture drawings now in the collection of the Museum of Art and History in Brussels (inv. 8852). The sheet contains a ms. note in the same brown ink, describing the height and costs of the intended statue "Mot koste 55 gulde wisselgelt / 3 voeten hogh". - Ref. https://rkd.nl/explore/artists/64176. - Joined, 4 anonymous drawings: 1. (1703 Lith/Nordbrabant - 1777 Antwerpen) Umkreis Madonna Terrakotta. Vollplastische, rücks. abgeflachte Statuette auf einer wolkenartig reliefierten Plinthe. Maria in einem bodenlangen Kleid und korrespondierendem Mantel, den Kopf mit geflochtenem Haar zum Kind gesenkt, das sie mit beiden Händen hält; das lebendig geschilderte Kind mit zum Kopf Mariens erhobenen Händen und Blick, was die tiefe innerliche Verbindung zur Gottesmutter zum Ausdruck bringt. Pompe lernte ab 1722 bei Michiel van der Voort in Antwerpen Bildhauerei und wurde 1729 Meister in der Lukasgilde. Er erwarb sich rasch einen bedeutenden Ruf und betrieb eine florierende Werkstatt mit später bedeutenden Schülern. Pompe arbeitete hauptsächlich für Kirchen und Klöster, neben seinen monumentalen religiösen Werken entstanden jedoch auch Porträtbüsten und Figuren aus Holz, Elfenbein und nicht zuletzt Terrakotta. Pompe, Walter (1703 - 1777) Madone à l'Enfant. Sculptée dans le buis. Cette sculpture en buis est un véritable petit chef-d'oeuvre de l'un des meilleurs sculpteurs flamands du XVIIIe siècle. L'oeuvre est signée et datée de 1768. Rappelons que les Pompe formèrent une dynaste d'artistes et d'architectes depuis le XVIIe siècle et jusqu'à la fin du XXe siècle, entre Malines, Anvers, Bruxelles et Louvain.. Les églises du marquisat d'Anvers et du duché de Brabant, en ce compris aux Pays-Bas (il est né à Lith, dans la province du Brabant hollandais actuel), regorgent encore de ses sculptures et autels baroques. Comme Duquesnoy il était spécialiste des Christ, de toutes tailles, selon les commandes privées ou pour des églises. La présente Madone n'est pas sans rappeler celle qui est conservée en l'église Notre-Dame de Turnhout. On remarquera son élégance, la façon de rendre le volume des drapés et la juste proportion des formes. La main droite tient une tige en fer torsadée qui remplace sans doute une palme. Le Christ enfant accompagne sa mère mais l'état de la sculpture ne nous le montre plus sur son bras gauche. La Madone est posée sur un socle qui lui-même surmonte un petit reliquaire dont on appréciera les volutes. L'artiste a travaillé le bois, la pierre, plus rarement le marbre et beaucoup la terre cuite. H de la sculpture : 27 cm Manques partiels et accidents.

La plus remarquable sculpture est sans doute celle réalisée pour l'église Saint Benoît de Morstel, pour laquelle le Louvre conserve une maquette en terre cuite.
