  • FREDERICK WILLIAM POMEROY (BRITISH 1856-1924)
    Jan. 15, 2025

    FREDERICK WILLIAM POMEROY (BRITISH 1856-1924)

    Est: £4,000 - £6,000

FREDERICK WILLIAM POMEROY (BRITISH 1856-1924) WOMAN WITH A SNAKE AND LILIES bronze, greenish brown patina, signed with initials F.W.P. and dated 1914, on a green marble socle and square base, partial gallery label underneath, *HICKSEE & CO. Figure 49cm high, 56cm high overall Note: Frederick William Pomeroy was born in Lambeth on 9 October 1856. He studied at Lambeth School of Art and, from 1881 to 1885, at the Royal Academy Schools in London where he won both a gold medal and a travel scholarship. After travelling in France and Italy, he returned to London and embarked on a career as a sculptor, metalworker, medallist and stone-carver. He was a frequent exhibitor at the Royal Academy in London from 1885 to (posthumously) 1925. Pomeroy was a prominent figure in the major revival of sculpture that took place in England from the 1870s onwards. The New Sculpture, as it was called, was particularly notable for a renewed interest in the techniques of bronze casting, coinciding with a rise in popular taste for Italian Renaissance bronzes.

Chairman of Tate & Lyle. A slightly earlier and larger cast of this figure is held in The Tate collection, presented by Henry J. Pfungst 1898 (REFERENCE N01762). The gallery label for the Tate example states that Pomeroy was a prominent figure in the major revival of sculpture that took place in England from the 1870s onwards. The New Sculpture, as it was called, was particularly notable for a renewed interest in the techniques of bronze casting, coinciding with a rise in popular taste for Italian Renaissance bronzes. Pomeroy is reported to have 'made his mark' with this sculpture when he showed it as a plaster cast at the Royal Academy in 1890.

Frederick William Pomeroy English, 1856-1924 dionysus signed: F.W. POMEROY.ARA.SC 1903 and inscribed in Greek Dionysus bronze, dark brown patina, on a mottled green marble base bronze: 41 cm., 16 1/8 in. base: 3.5 cm., 1 3/8 in. Read comments that there are several versions of the Dionysus dating to between 1890 - when one was exhibited at the Royal Academy - and 1909, 'differing in essentials such as the degree of modesty observed, achieved by means of the foliage in the god's hand'. In style, it makes an interesting English interpretation of the work of his contemporary, Vincenzo Gemito. This may have resulted from Pomeroy's travels in Italy in the mid-1880's, when he won a travelling scholarship from the Royal Academy. Related literature: Read p.317

Pomeroy 1905 Copyright Bronze, mid-brown patination Figure 22 cm (8 3/4 in) Base 6.5 cm (2 1/2 in) Frederick Blackwood had a distinguished political and diplomatic carrer. He was Under-Secretary for India (1864-66) and for War (1866); Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster in (1868-72); Governor-General of Canada (1872-78), having been created earl in 1871. From 1879 to 1881 he was ambassador at St. Petersburg and later at Constantinople. In 1884 he became Viceroy of India, where he strengthened the Indian frontier and annexed Upper Burma in 1885. He was created marquess in 1888 and became ambassador at Rome and finally Paris (1891-96). Pomeroy exhibited a bronze statue of the late Marquess of Dufferin and Ava at the Royal Academy in 1905 (no.1664). The following year he presented a model of a monument to the Marquess (no. 1615) to be erected in Belfast. When working on his statue Pomeroy may have known George Frederick Watt's painting of the subject, given to the National Portrait Gallery in 1902.
