ANSICHT DES MARKUSBECKENS IN VENEDIG Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 36 x 61 cm. Rechts unten Restsignatur, verso alter Galerieaufkleber mit Betitelung „Canal Grande“ und Zeitangabe um 1880. In dekorativem, teilvergoldeten Rahmen. Im ruhig fließenden Wasser des Canal Grande mehrere Boote und Gondeln, rechtsseitig die Kuppel der Basilika Santa Maria della Salute, sowie das Gebäude der Punta della Dogana. In der Mitte des Hintergrunds schemenhaft Gebäude der Stadt mit dem hochragenden Campanile erkennbar, unter hohem blauem Himmel in sommerlichem Licht. Darstellung in überwiegend monochromer beige-brauner und leicht rötlicher Farbgebung bei bläulichem Wasser und Horizont. Der britische Künstler ist vor allem als versierter Maler venezianischer Szenen bekannt. Viele seiner Bilder entstanden in einem impressionistischen Stil, wie auch das hier vorliegende Gemälde. Pollentine stellte von 1861 bis 1880 zahlreiche Werke in mehreren der besten Galerien Englands aus, darunter zwei der renommiertesten Londoner, The British Institution und The Society of British Artists. Alfred Pollentine was a British painter of English and Italian landscapes, but his career was defined by magnificent views of Venice. Alfred Pollentine moved from London to Italy in the mid 19th century from where he became one of the most prolific and popular English veduta painters of 19th century Venice. Between 1861 and 1880 Pollentine exhibited at the British Institute and the Royal Society of British Artists in London. One of a kind artwork.

Espone nelle più importanti gallerie inglesi, diversi suoi dipinti sono custoditi in importanti collezioni private. Alors qu'il débute par des vues côtières du littoral anglais, il découvre la lagune, sa vie, ses scènes chaleureuses et fantaisistes. Pollentine peint dans un style proche de l'impressionnisme, avec une palette complexe de tonalités riches et chaudes.
