    Solomon Polack (1757-1839). Portrait of a young man wearing a blue jacket, shoulder length 6.5cm x 5.2cm, oval. In a plain gilt metal oval frame, the glazed back with a seed pearl monogram 'GHB' on a hair ground; Together with a George III mourning ring, with a central hair locket compartment within a black enamel border, a cluster surround of rose-cut diamonds and reeded tapered shoulders, the under gallery with engraved dedication, dated 1808 for Elizabeth Scorbell

    PORTRAIT MINIATURES OF PARDON & HEPSA HOWLAND BY SOLOMON POLACK.

    First quarter 19th century. American. This fine pair of miniature portraits painted on ivory of Pardon Howland (1777-1821) and his wife Hepsa Hathaway Howland (1777-1856) both of New Bedford, Massachusetts. Each portrait painted by Solomon Polack (Flemish 1757-1839). Back of Pardon's portrait is affixed with label for S. Polack and in addition is written part of family history identifying the sitter and location "Antwerp" as well as names of certain family members. Back of Hepsa's portrait with similar transcription of family history. Pardon's 3/4 bust portrait shows him dressed in black coat with white high collar and lace cravat. 3/4 bust portrait of Hepsa shows her in white dress with matching soft cap. Each in period ebonized and gilt metal frame. SIZE: Overall: 5-1/2" h x 4-1/2" w. Portraits: 2-7/8" h x 2-1/4" w., sight. PROVENANCE: Descent through Hathaway-Howland Family to the current owner. CONDITION: Pardon portrait with vertical and parallel cracks running the length of the portrait. Otherwise both portraits are in good untouched condition. 9-24566
