PODESTI Francesco (1800-1895), attribué à. Portrait en buste du jeune comte de Chambord (1820-1883). Huile sur toile, non signée, datant de 1840, conservée dans son magnifique cadre d’origine en bois sculpté et doré surmonté des grandes armes de France sous couronne royale et orné à chaque angle dans un cartouche d’une fleur de lys. Usures du temps au cadre, mais bon état général. À vue : H. : 64 cm – L. : 51 cm. Cadre : H. : 106 cm – L. : 82 cm. Historique : c’est lors de son tour d’Europe que le jeune prince arrivé à Rome le 20 octobre 1839 fit la connaissance du peintre italien Francesco Podesti. Et c’est au cours de l’année suivante que ce dernier réalisa le portrait ci-dessus. Cette œuvre fut largement reprise en gravures et en lithographies durant la seconde partie du XIXe siècle. Référence : plusieurs versions de ce portrait sont connues, mais à chaque fois avec de légères variantes, comme celui de la collection Raymond Jeanvrot (Musée de Bordeaux, Inv. 58.1.5443), sur lequel le prince porte une cravate noire. Il existe aussi une version en pied signée par l’artiste et datée 1840, sur laquelle le prince tient dans sa main gauche une paire de gants (Château de Chambord, Inv. Ch/41/0551) et sur une autre version, le prince porte une cape, dans la même pose, mais sur un fond vert

Francesco Podesti (Ancona 1800-Roma 1895) - Study for the painting The Judgment of Solomon

charcoal and white lead on card 190 x 292.50 cm The work offered here represents a preparatory study for the large canvas The Judgment of Solomon, which in 1836 was the first major commission by Carlo Alberto, who ascended the throne of the Kingdom of Sardinia in 1831. The painting, once completed, it was first exhibited in the room that precedes the weapons gallery in Palazzo Madama in Turin and subsequently placed in Palazzo Reale. The Podesti obtained from the sovereign great freedom in the choice of the subject and the result was so successful in procuring the artist not only the Cross of Civil Merit but also the invitation, by the king, to become a professor at the newly formed Albertina Academy. Compared to the painting, this cartoon has some differences, such as the different location of the menorah, here placed behind the throne of Solomon instead of in the background, the absence of some figures at the edge of the scene and slightly different positions and physiognomies , in particular with regard to the figure of Solomon and the child lying on the ground.

Huile sur toile non signée, datée en bas à gauche 1840, conservée dans son encadrement d’époque en bois doré, à décor d’arabesques et de motifs floraux. Restauration, accidents au cadre, mais bon état général. À vue : H. : 63 cm – L. : 51,5 cm. Cadre : H. : 86 cm – L. : 75 cm.
