JOHANN GEORG PLATZER (ST PAUL IN EPPAN 1704-1761 ST MICHAEL IN EPPAN). Marinus Curius Dentatus and the Samnite Ambassadors. oil on copper 22 x 29 5⁄8 in. (55.9 x 75.2 cm.).
JOHANN GEORG PLATZER (Eppan 1704 - 1761 Eppan) High-spirited party, around 1750 oil/copper 57 x 81 cm signed J. G. Platzer provenance: private collection Vienna SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 60000 - 120000 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 60000 Johann Georg Platzer, who came from Eppan in Tyrol, was born with his artistic destiny, so to speak. As was customary at the time, he followed in the professional footsteps of his father, the painter Johan Victor Platzer. However, he did not receive his first artistic training from him, but from his stepfather Josef Anton Kössler. He later took painting lessons from his uncle Christoph Platzer, court painter to the Prince-Bishop of Passau. Finally, the young artist perfected himself in Vienna: at the age of 24, he enrolled at the academy here and became an important protagonist of the Viennese Rococo as well as one of the most important fine painters of the 18th century. As such, he mostly painted, as in our case, on copper plates, since on these smooth surfaces the fine lines are not affected by the painting surface. When choosing his motifs and his painting technique, he was influenced on the one hand by the Dutch minor masters of the 17th century and on the other hand by the Rudolfinian chamber painters such as the mannerists Hans von Aachen and Bartholomäus Spranger. In Platzer's architectural depictions there are influences from Italian painters such as Sebastiano Ricci, Alessandro Magnasco and the Galli Bibiena. The themes of his mostly small-format works are taken from mythology, the Bible or history or describe courtly life in the 18th century. In his magnificent celebratory depictions, Platzer accommodated lovers of overt and hidden eroticism: cheerful enjoyment of life is refined and heightened to the point of intoxication. Platzer regularly populated his pictures with a large variety of figures and decorated them with a variety of decorations that never let the eye rest and constantly discover new things. Tiny details and paintings in the paintings lead to ever-increasing hints and connections. Platzer liked to create contrasting pairs and series of pictures to furnish cabinets. His patron, the Breslau patrician, councilor and art collector Albrecht von Sebisch, ordered a series of 14 paintings from him. Our picture may have been part of such a couple or ensemble, as a note attached to the verso suggests. There it is described as a "counterpart" to Platzer's painting "The Concert" - gifted to the St. Petersburg Hermitage by the sensual Catherine the Great and owned by the Germanic National Museum in Nuremberg since 1934. According to the note, our picture was reproduced in 1903 under the title “Salon du Règne de Louis “Soviet Russia” for RM 5,750. In fact, since the 1920s, the Soviet Union has been selling cultural assets abroad on a large scale to raise foreign currency. “The Concert” (around 1750, 58 x 84.4 cm) arrived in Germany for a much lower price: the GNM paid RM 2,300 for it. The content of our picture, called “The Society” by the author of the note, is described as follows: “In a garden hall there is a couple, on the right card players, where an older man is cheated by cheating, on the left people feasting and drinking, everyone present with special pomp If we follow the Russian title, we find ourselves in a salon during the reign of Louis XV, King of France from 1715 to 1774. A wild party is underway in the noble salon, which opens onto a garden terrace. While the older man on the far right is being cheekily cheated out of his money with the help of an accomplice, almost all the other characters are busy flirting. The accomplice, whose left hand holds a mirror behind the victim's cards, also seeks to be physically close to him, probably to distract him. The cheating duo uses their feminine charms offensively to get to the man's bag. In order to dispel any remaining doubts in the viewer's mind as to who is the loser and who is the winner, Platzer has positioned the emptied wallet of the man, who is looking intently, but not unfriendly, at his cards, at his feet. The former contents lie on the table in front of the playing lady and are jealously guarded by her hand. A boy makes fun of the cheated man; With a grin, he points his finger at him and makes eye contact with the guitarist. But the musician doesn't look back, but rather towards the viewer, with a serene silver look that says: “There! Look at them, the high society!” Next to him, a man leans casually on the card-player’s chair and flirts with the lady in black and red; The two notice the deception and watch the genas leader's downfall with mild interest. As usual with Platzer, the painting is full of erotic allusions. The couple in the center are quite open: the two seem to really enjoy being in public while cuddling. The man pours his lady with the generous cleavage a lot of wine to make her submissive; Judging by her strangely twisted posture, she has already had more than enough. The drape of her candy pink dress happens to resemble the vulva that the garment actually covers. Her dog looks up at the young gentleman with his tail wagging and symbolically demands loyalty from him. On the other hand, the lap dog, also called bosom dog and virgin dog as well as pleasure dog and play dog, also had a different, clearly sexual meaning, especially in the 18th century. Behind the couple, two cavaliers with Mephistophelian grins are trying to woo the same lady. One plays lustfully with her fingers, which doesn't seem to bother the other. The erotic mood of the scene is further emphasized by the overripe, opening fruits in the picture; and the equipment also speaks for itself. The garden hall is richly decorated with two- and three-dimensional figures, all of which are naked: the female fountain figure behind the group of three smiles and sprays water from her breasts - as a profane reference to the iconography of Maria lactans; A putto, eyes wide in horror, rushes to her aid to stem the flood. A tongue-in-cheek criticism of all this frivolity should not be missing: In the painting behind the gaming table, Venus chastises the cheeky Cupid boy by spanking his bare bottom with a bundle of rods. When we have finally had enough of the wild hustle and bustle, our gaze wanders into the garden in the background, where Aurora is already blushing over a clearly ambiguous little gate. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° at the estimate), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax is added to the sum of the highest bid and the buyer's premium. This amounts to 13% for paintings, drawings, graphic works and sculptures and 20% for photographs and all other items. The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.

JOSEF ENTZIEHT SICH DER FRAU DES POTIPHAR Öl auf Kupfer. 29 x 40 cm. (951061)
Johann Georg Platzer is one of the greatest representatives of the Viennese Rococo; the charm and frivolity of which is captured in his works, mostly on copper, with such joy and detail. His works, already in his lifetime, were in many court and later museum, for example, the Hermitage, Leningrad, the Metropolitan Museum and Wallace Collection, London. The works are rarely signed but due to their distinctive style are easily recognisable. Characteristic features of his works are the bright and shiny-silver colours and the precise drawing technique, for which he is often referred to as the "Austrian Goltzius".
