  • IGNÁC FRANTIŠEK PLATZER (ATTRIBUTED) 1717 - 1787 - PAIR OF CHURCH DIGNITARIES
    Dec. 04, 2024

IGNÁC FRANTIŠEK PLATZER (ATTRIBUTED) 1717 - 1787 - PAIR OF CHURCH DIGNITARIES

    Est: -

Large paired busts with a polished white finish represent two images of bishops by the important Czech sculptor Ignác František Platzer or his pupils, created in the second half of the 18th century. The busts, placed on plinths with an infulio and a baroque cartouche, are made with a great degree of elegance and attention to detail. Ignác František Platzer was a Czech-Austrian sculptor and carver active in the late Baroque and Classical periods. He is one of the main representatives of the sculpture of the second half of the 18th century in Bohemia. His works were informed by the Viennese mannerist classicism of Georg Raphael Donner and Paul Troger, but at the beginning the artist adapted to the requirements of the Prague environment and worked more in an expressive baroque style. Later, he moved towards classicist tendencies. Provenance: the collection of Dr. Zdeněk Macek

  • IGNÁC FRANTIŠEK PLATZER 1717 - 1787 - SAINT JOHN OF NEPOMUK
    Dec. 10, 2020

IGNÁC FRANTIŠEK PLATZER 1717 - 1787 - SAINT JOHN OF NEPOMUK

    Est: -

Sketch of the statue of St. Jan Nepomucký, whose larger realization comes from the decoration of the Premonstratensian monastery in Teplá, it was made in 1750s. It depicts the greatest domestic Baroque saint stepping on one foot, while the other, according to traditional iconography, relies on either a shell, a fish or a river wave. In a later elaboration, Jan Nepomucký holds a book in his left hand and has a biret on it. Platzer's work is characterized by bodily sensuality and fullness of forms - the author has succeeded in combining the domestic High Baroque tradition with Viennese classicism. František Ignác Platzer was a Czech late Baroque sculptor and carver, a member of the family of carvers from Western Bohemia. He trained in Vienna and founded a large workshop in Prague, which supplied entire sets of carving and stone sculptures for churches, monasteries, castles and castle gardens throughout Bohemia for more than 150 years, until the beginning of the 20th century.

Ignaz Franz Platzer (1717-1787) (attributed to) - Two Allegorical Sculpture Groups - The Victory of Faith

    Est: Kč220,000 - Kč290,000

Polychromed wood. Ignaz Franz Platzer was one of the most important sculptors of the second half of the 18th century in Bohemia. His work was inspired by the Viennese Mannerist Classicism of Georg Raphael Donner and Paul Troger, but early on the artist adapted to the requirements of the Prague milieu and created a more expressive baroque concept. Both statues represent the allegory of the victory of faith. In religious art from the Middle Ages, religion or faith were represented by female figures. The first one stands on a figure with her hands tied, symbolizing sin, binding the human spirit. The second one tramples a man, trying to hide his face as he holds an open book with heretic teachings. Provenance: collection of Dr. Zdenek Macek
