  • MAXIMILIÁN PIRNER 1854 - 1924 - ALLEGORY OF SPRING
    Jun. 06, 2024

    MAXIMILIÁN PIRNER 1854 - 1924 - ALLEGORY OF SPRING

    Est: -

Maxmilián Pirner created an engaging work full of fantasy, allegory and Art Nouveau ornamentation. The personified seasons and rivers are transformed into beautiful maidens, who bend, dance or fly in poses. Jokingly, spring sits in the branches of autumn chestnut trees, waiting for its moment to come. The profound dimensions of Pirner's symbolist work led him to decadence. His work as an illustrator and the artistic climate of the time also had a significant influence on his work, as Pirner defined himself against naturalism and contrasted it with fantasy, symbol and allegory. Technique: oil on canvas, Signed: sign. lower left: M. Pirner 12

    MAXIMILIÁN PIRNER 1854 - 1924 - JOUSTING

    Est: -

The symbolist dynamic composition follows the cycle of ballads about a knight from the 1970s, from challenging years when the social and economic crisis greatly affected cultural life. Generations of the National Theater and solitaires like Maxmilián Pirner, who also ventured into darker areas, tried to find starting points. The work of Maxmilián Pirner is characterized by a symbolist tuning set in the world of fantasy and often an ironic line. The depicted knight on horseback allows himself to be tricked during the duel and fights an unequal battle with death itself, which wins even with a broken pole. Technique: oil on canvas, Signed: unsigned

    SAINT VENCESLAS

    Est: -

Original design by painter Max Pirner from March 30, 1900 (handwritten signature at the top right) for the parish church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Písek. Since 1900, the church has been decorated on one of the windows with a stained glass made by Jindřich Pazdera, painting based on Pirner's design. It depicts St. Wenceslas sitting on a horse accompanied by members of his retinue, on the left several saints take him to paradise. St. Wenceslas adores the Virgin Mary depicted above him with Jesus, an angel hovering to the right above him hands him a martyr's palm. At the very top, a pair of angels hold the St. Wenceslas crown, above which the dove of the Holy Spirit hovers. In the lower part, separated by the text "You are the heir of the Czech land, remember your family" wife and man kneeling who allegedly have the faces of the patrons who financially contributed to the stained glass. Among them is an inscription board with a commemorative text: Dedicated to the city savings bank after 25 years of operation - established the years of the Lord MCM. The emblem of the town of Písek and the emblem of the Czech Kingdom are depicted at the very bottom. Technique: Ink, pencil, watercolour, gouache, paper, Signed: Upper right "M. Pirner, 30.3.1900"

    HOMO HOMINI LUPUS

    Est: -

Homo Homini Lupus, a Latin proverb meaning “man is wolf to man”, is a work in which Pirner uses allegories to criticize and parody society. With animals onlooking, the winged figure of Imagination is being crucified by a troop of monkeys. The allegory of the ideal world of Art is subjected to a ruthless and devastating clash with the reality of modern times. In combining the allegorical and symbolic content, Pirner reveals his view filled with irony and personal feelings of disillusion and pessimism. As in his other fin-de-siècle works, Pirner uses Art Nouveau ornamentation motifs.
