    Giulio Pippi de' Jannuzzi o Giannuzzi, detto Giulio Romano (Roma 1492 o 1499 - Mantova 1546) cerchia Rinaldo presso il mago d’Ascalona Olio su tela 38 x 36,5 cm Artista ancora legato al concetto rinascimentale del termine, è dedito ad occuparsi di ogni aspetto legato alla residenza e alla vita di rappresentanza del proprio signore, fornendo disegni per arazzi, dipingendo e decorando, producendo opere scultoree e oggetti preziosi. Comandava e dirigeva i lavori dei collaboratori e artigiani che lo aiutavano nella sua mansione. La sua nascita non è ancora definitivamente stabilita, e pare sia più circoscritta la versione di Vasari, di cui era amico, che ci tramanda la sua morte avvenuta a 54 anni, arretrando, quindi, la nascita al 1492. Nel 1520 eredita per testamento del maestro urbinate la bottega e le commissioni. Giulio completa, pertanto, i lavori in corso. coadiuvato da Gian Francesco Penni, realizza la Sala di Costantino (o dei Pontefici), in Vaticano, utilizzando i cartoni di Raffaello e completandola nel 1524. Grazie all’interessamento di Baldassarre Castiglione, ambasciatore a Roma dei Gonzaga, nel 1524 si trasferisce presso la corte di Mantova, ottenendo il monopolio dei progetti architettonici e decorativi oltre al soprannome di "Giulio Romano". Il suo primo incarico mantovano è la direzione dei lavori della villa di Marmirolo (distrutta), e successivamente la realizzazione di Palazzo Te: per affrescare quest'ultimo, Giulio Romano utilizza numerosi aiuti, tra cui, Raffaellino del Colle e Francesco Primaticcio. Giulio Romano agisce con un’impronta di fasto decorativo e gusto per il bizzarro, fondendo la perfezione creativa e la ricerca della bellezza ideale di Raffaello con la forza dell’immagine di Michelangelo. La nostra opera mostra evidenti consonanze stilistiche, soprattutto nel disegno di Rinaldo, con le opere sia pittoriche che grafiche di Giulio Rimano. Inoltre, anche la scelta cromatica squillante e vitrea, può sostenere la tesi attributiva. La qualità realizzativa, di assoluto pregio, permette di assegnare l’opera ad un importante artista cresciuto nel suo ambito. The present sheet is a study for the winged figure over the right arch of the Loggia of David in Palazzo Te, Mantua, which Giulio Romano decorated between 1532-1534. The decoration, now lost, is recorded in a drawing executed by Ippolito Andreasi after the Loggia (see A. Belluzzi and K. W. Forster in Giulio Romano, exh. cat., Palazzo Te, Mantua, 1989, p. 333, ill.). Andreasi's drawing is in the Kunstmuseum, Düsseldorf, with large numbers of copies after Giulio Romano. The same figure is found to the left of the barbarians in a modello in the Louvre for the lost garden façade of the Palazzo Te (see F. Hartt, Giulio Romano, Yale, 1958, no. 211, fig. 164).
