Piotrowski had a unique ability to depict dramatic moments in history and battle scenes with striking intensity. After studying under such masters as Wojciech Gerson the Younger in Munich and Jan Matejko at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, Piotrowski went through different periods such as late romanticism, positivism and symbolism, and finally developed his unique documentary-like and detail oriented style covering military operations. Piotrowski, himself participated in wars and was a direct witness of the battles he painted. In 1879, Piotrowski travelled to the newly liberated Bulgaria as a correspondent for the British The Graphic, and The Illustrated London News as well as for the French Le Monde Illustre. In 1885 he joined the Serbo-Bulgarian War as a Bulgarian volunteer for what he received the recognition of the first artist of the Bulgarian army and was awarded with an Order of Bravery from the Bulgarian State. During his time as an artist in the Bulgarian Army Piotrowski painted the Battle of Slivnitsa, the storming of Tsaribrod and the Bulgarian entry in Pirot, as well as his epic canvas The Batak Massacre. The painting won an award at the Plovdiv Fair in 1892 and was included in the collection of the National Gallery of Foreign Art, Bulgaria. Nine of his historical battle-scenes painted in Bulgaria were purchased by the Bulgarian state, and are exhibited in the National Museum of Military History in Sofia.  CONDITION Observed in frame, the painting is in good condition, relined, small damage to the upper left corner, surface grime and some minor scattered scratches, UV light inspection showed overall in-painting and retouching around 50%. Antoni Piotrowski (1853-1924) was a Polish romanticist painter who worked as war correspondent and illustrator for various Western European weeklies and periodicals in late-19th century during the Liberation of Bulgaria. Piotrowski was born in 1853 into a family of sheet iron workers in Nietulisko DuŠ¼e near Kunów, then in the Russian sector of the partitioned Poland. From 1869 on, Piotrowski studied painting with professor Wojciech Gerson in Warsaw. Between 1875 and 1877 he studied in Munich with Wilhelm Lindenschmit the Younger. From 1877 to 1879 he studied with Poland's painter Jan Matejko at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. In 1879, Piotrowski travelled to the newly liberated Principality of Bulgaria as a correspondent of the British weekly newspapers The Graphic and The Illustrated London News as well as the French newsmagazines Illustration and Le Monde Illustré. He moved back to Paris only to return to Bulgaria in 1885 to join the Serbo-Bulgarian War as a Bulgarian volunteer. For his merits during the fighting he was honoured with an Order of Bravery. In 1900 Piotrowski returned to Poland and settled in Warsaw. In 1905, he was a war correspondent in Manchuria. He died in 1924 in Warsaw. Depicted in the present painting is an important event in the history of Poland which is known as the ‘January Uprising of 1863’. This was an uprising in the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (present-day Poland, Lithuania, Belarus, Latvia, parts of Ukraine, and western Russia) against the Russian Empire. It began on 22 January 1863 and lasted until the last insurgents were captured in 1864. The uprising began as a spontaneous protest by young Poles against conscription into the Imperial Russian Army. It was soon joined by high-ranking Polish-Lithuanian officers and various politicians. The insurrectionists, severely outnumbered and lacking serious outside support, were forced to resort to guerrilla warfare tactics. Public executions and deportations to Siberia led many Poles to abandon armed struggle and turn instead to the idea of "organic work": economic and cultural self-improvement. (source: Wikipedia)

The genre scene stands out for its balanced composition and masterful play of colours. The colourful tones in the clothing of the girls charmingly contrast with the earthy tones of the field. Through the veil of rain are visible a few bright cornflowers. The dynamic is particularly fascinating, as manifested in the waving clothing of the girls and the lashing rain. The girls seem to practically rush out the picture plane to save them from the unexpected pour. The artist has nonetheless succeeded to depict the pleasant rather than the irritating effect of summer rain with the girls' sweet expression and the harmonious colours of their clothing. Antoni Piotrowski has created an extraordinary painting that convinces with its masterful snapshot depiction and the coherent perspectives. The painting is signed lower right 'Antoni Piotrowski'. Stamps of the art supplier 'Juliana Burof' in Warsaw can be found on the back of the canvas. It is in very good condition with only minor signs of age. The colour surface shows some craquelure. The gold coloured wooden frame has minimal wear. The dimensions, framed, are 88 x 114.5 cm. The stretcher frame measures 70.5 x 99.5 cm. Antoni Piotrowski (1853-1924) The Polish painter and illustrator Antoni Piotrowski ranks among the artists of romanticism and realism. He mainly created genre and history paintings. From 1867, Piotrowski studied at the Drawing School in Warsaw. In 1875, he came to the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. He then studied a few months at the Art School in Cracow in the years 1877/78. Piotrowski lived and worked in Paris, Cracow and Warsaw. At the end of the 19th century, he often spent time as a war correspondent and illustrator in Bulgaria. He even participated himself in the Bulgarian-Serbian war in favor of Bulgaria. His battle scenes show the influences of this experience. Today, works by Piotrowski can therefore be seen for example in the National Military Museum in Sofia.
