Water colour and pencil on paper England, around 1860 Attributed to George John Pinwell (1842-1875) – British water colour painter Charming Interior scene Nicely framed Dimensions (framed): 32 x 38 cm Provenance: German Private Collection Very good condition This charming water colour by the British artist George John Pinwell was probably painted around 1860. In an impressionistic manner and with a dark colour palette Pinwell has depicted figures in an interior. This work is most likely a study and dated towards the end of his life, in which he was influence by the great French impressionist to draw in a more fluid fashion. The painting style in this water colour is similar to his study “The Pied Piper of Hamelin” from 1971 owned by the Tate in London. As off 1870 Pinwell was a member of the ‘Royal Watercolour Society’ and this well executed study deals as a great example to show why. The study is in very good condition. It is framed nicely (the frame having three stains at the upper rim) and the dimensions framed are 32 x 38 cm. Without the frame the paper measures 15.5 x 23 cm. George John Pinwell (1842-1875) George John Pinwell was born in Wycombe, England and educated at Heatherley's Academy. His earliest drawings appeared in ‘Littiput Levée’. In 1863 his first drawing appeared in ‘Once a Week’ and from that time his work was in constant demand. His most important productions made for the Dalziel brothers were illustrations of Jean Ingelow's poems, Robert Buchanan's ‘Ballads of the Affections’, and the ‘Arabian Nights’. In 1874 Pinwell fell seriously ill and went to Africa for the winter. He painted several remarkable pictures at Tangier, but his strength gradually broke down and he returned to die in 1875. Pinwell was an exhibitor at the Dudley gallery, and as off 1870 a member of the ‘Royal Watercolor Society’. To this gallery he contributed fifty-nine works. A posthumous exhibition of his works was held in 1876 in Bond Street, London. His works are part of numerous renowned British collections, the most prominent being Tate Britain.
