Such experiences of migration and the Sri Lankan Civil War have had huge impacts on Saskia Pintelon’s art-making practices. What she had heard and seen forced her to form a keen mind and penetrating eye to look deep into the nature of human beings. This auction presents the piece titled Day by Day. This large, abstract painting consisting of signs and image might not stir up strong emotions at first glance, yet if you take a careful look at it together with the artist’s biography, you will find out her deep concern about day-to-day issues and collective human experience. On the canvas with a look of a cloudy, dark sky, the symbols represent an ancient way of numerical counting, in which people carve vertical and horizontal short lines to record the passage of time.
