May Londra, Christie's, 18 febbraio 1983, lotto 188 (come Bartolomeo Pinelli; cfr. https://rkd.nl/imageslite/1780578) Bartolomeo Pinelli è noto soprattutto come illustratore, descrivendo la vita popolare e i costumi del popolo romano. Ereditò in parte la sua arte da Felice Giani, con il quale collaborò negli affreschi del Palazzo di Spagna a Roma, dimostrandosi un abile pittore di figura. Altrettanto evidenti in lui sono le suggestioni della cultura arcadica settecentesca, ma rielaborata con naturalezza, grazie ad una spontaneità disegnativa e pittorica di notevole modernità. La critica novecentesca non fu sempre condiscendente nei suoi confronti, talvolta relegandolo ai margini di una produzione da Souvenir d'Italie, accusandolo di descrivere una realtà falsata delle condizioni sociali dello stato pontificio. Certamente la Roma del Pinelli vede il tramonto dell'epoca d'oro dei viaggiatori, l'epoca del Grand Tour si va spegnendosi e, di conseguenza, anche i giudizi sulla Città Eterna divengono caustici come ricordano le parole di Hippolyte Taine: 'una città di provincia, mal tenuta, mal sistemata, barocca e sudicia'. In Pinelli la rappresentazione della storia non prescinde mai dall'attualità e che con sincero sentimento illuministico affronta la quotidianità minuta di una Roma osservata e descritta dal vero giungendo così ad una sua lettura romantica.

Hiler 712. – Folge heiterer, gelegentlich dramatischer dekorativer Tafeln, die das römische Volksleben abbilden, darunter Markt-, Musikanten-, Festszenen, Szenen des täglichen Lebens, darunter Tänze, Weinernte, Serenaden, einen Tanzbären, eine Laterna Magica, ein Kasperltheater, Bocciaspieler und vieles mehr, meist vor der grandiosen Kulisse der römischen Antiken am Vespatempel, im Parco degli Acquedotti, dem Porticus der Octavia, den Kaiserforen, aber auch in den Rom umgebenden Landschaften, am Lago Martigniano, in der Campagna, Frascati etc. Auch ein Selbstbildnis des Kupferstechers selbst mit seinen Hunden ist darunter.
