(1883 Mailand - 1966 Paris) Bogenschütze Bronze, dunkelolivfarben patiniert. Behauener Steinsockel in Felsform. Es sind eine Reihe unterschiedlicher Güsse dieses Modells bekannt, die Kombination mit Felssockel ist typisch für Pina, die gerne die Textur von Naturstein verwendete - hier mit der in den Stein hineingearbeiteten, athletischen Aktfigur des Bogenschützen. Inspiriert worden sein dürfte Pina hierzu durch die 1909 geschaffene, bekannte Plastik "Herakles der Bogenschütze" von Antoine Bourdelle. Der italienische Bildhauer ging 1911 nach Paris, wo er Schüler Auguste Rodins wurde. Pina stellte bis 1914 auf den verschiedenen Salons in Paris aus. Nach dem I. Weltkrieg konnte er an seine früheren Erfolge anknüpfen, ein Atelier in Paris lag in Montparnasse neben dem Bourdelles, ein zweites zur Realisierung seiner großen Denkmäler-Aufträge in Mesves-sur-Loire mit angeschlossenem Steinbruch. Alfred Pina's style denotes the influence of Rodin, of whom he was a disciple, through abrupt and unfinished forms, bodies twisted with passion or pain and an impetuous tone especially noticeable in his nudes. Alfred Pina began his studies at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan, although he soon moved to Bologna and Rome. In 1911 he moved to Paris, where he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1911 to 1914. He received many commissions for busts and tried his hand at wood engraving. After the outbreak of the First World War, Alfred Pina went into exile in Montpellier, whose museum acquired a Bust of Beethoven, one of his first important works and one of the most widely reproduced. It was in Paris between the wars that he made his name thanks to the retrospective exhibition of his works at the Galerie Allard in 1920, which was a great success. A universal competition launched by Benito Mussolini appointed him to the project for Dante's tomb, which was to be his masterpiece. He returned to Rome. On his return to France in 1929, he organised an exhibition of Italian artists from the capital at the Cercle de la rue Boissy d'Anglas. The bronzes from Dante's tomb were sent to be cast during the Second World War. In his work published in 1929 (cf. bibliography), Gaston de Pawlowski wrote: "Pina, too, a continuation of Michael Angelo and Rodin, has been able to build a completely new artistic world on ancient foundations".

AM 1733 S. Alfredo Pina s'est inspiré dans cette œuvre en bronze résolument moderne de l'iconographie médiévale de Caput Johannis in disco. Il s'agit de la tête de saint Jean Baptiste, considéré comme le dernier des prophètes et en même temps premier des martyrs chrétiens, précurseur et baptiseur du Christ. Il est ici représenté la tête posée sur un plateau, tel qu'indiqué dans les Écritures (Mc 6, 14-29 et Mt 14, 1-12) et les martyrologes décrivant la Passion de Jean-Baptiste. Le prophète est décapité lors d'un banquet à la demande de la fille d'Hérodias qui souhaite qu'on lui offre la tête de Jean sur un plateau. La dévotion médiévale a diffusé une typologie d'objets signifiants alors que plusieurs reliques de la tête du Baptiste sont arrivées au début du XIIIe siècle en Europe occidentale à l'instar du crâne momifié reposant sur un bol en argent serti de pierres précieuses et de perles conservée dans la cathédrale d'Amiens. Ici Alfredo Pina reprend cette image forte, signifiante, de la mort de saint Jean pour en faire une image plus universelle de memento mori. Estimation 15 000 - 20 000 €
