Provenienz / provenance: Privatsammlung Wien Josef Pillhofer ist einer der bedeutendsten Vertreter der klassischen Moderne nach 1945 im Bereich der Skulptur in Österreich. Der Wotruba-Schüler setzte sich konsequent mit den Grundprinzipien und Möglichkeiten kubistischer Formensprache auseinander und suchte stets Verdichtung durch Reduktion. Meine Arbeit hat mich gelehrt, dass die Bestimmung einer endgültigen Form von der Vorstellung eines inneren Zentrums, dem alle bildnerischen Verhältnisse zugeordnet sein müssen, abhängt. Der Umriss, die Silhouette, ist die Begrenzung, welche von innen her bestimmt wird und der Masse der Materie zu einem harmonischen Erscheinungsbild verhilft. (Josef Pillhofer)

Pillhofer 54' Sheet dimensions: 32.5 x 24 cm Good condition Provenance: German private collection Abstract rendering of an embracing couple, the drawing focusses on the contour lines This Indian ink drawing by the Austrian sculptor Josef Pillhofer (1921-2010) was created in 1954 and shows an embracing couple in his characteristic language of shapes. The work is signed and dated lower right in pencil 'J. Pillhofer 54', The drawing by Josef Pillhofer (1921-2010) is in good condition. The margins show fractionally tiny creases, at the outer left with a small hole/tear and verso tiny remains of former mount. The sheet measures 32.5 x 24 cm. Josef Pillhofer (1921-2010) Josef Pillhofer was born in June 1921 in Vienna and is considered one of the most important sculptors of Austria in the post war-period. Pillhofer first began studying sculpture and painting at the arts college in Graz, was from 1947 to 1950 student of Fritz Wotruba and from 1955 a member of the Vienna Secession. Pillhofer creates sculptures and figures of stone, wood, clay and metal and was stylistically influenced by Wilhelm Lehmbruck as well as by the Cubist Henri Laurens and the abstract artists Constantin Brancusi.
