High Chest By John Piggott Chatham County North Carolina

    Est: $10,000 - $40,000

Early 19th Century; Original; An important recent discovery, this high chest has descended through natives of Alamance County and has never been removed from Alamance County. 59.75” height, 40” width, 20” depth. A rare surviving example of a well-executed diminutive size tall chest with its original untouched surface finish and old patina. Walnut primary, yellow pine and poplar secondary woods. The yellow pine rectangular dovetailed top has an applied “one-piece” coved crown mold with beaded thumbnail top edge and a rare execution of a scalloped molded strip with rarely observed center diamond drop. The case is fitted with a typical drawer arrangement of three aligned top drawers, the center top drawer measures 3.5” by 14.25”, flanked by two drawers measuring 3.5” by 11.25”, over two aligned drawers at 5” by 18.75”, sitting over four full-length graduated drawers, the measurements of which are 6.25”, 7.75”, 9.5” and 11” in height each and all by 38.5” width. Each full-length drawer is inlaid with a light wood diamond key escutcheon. Each drawer having a beaded edge and fitted with original signed oval die-pressed brasses with initials of L.M and bail pulls. The dovetailed drawer secondary woods are made of poplar and southern yellow pine. The case is fitted with three upper drawer dividers and ¾ yellow pine dust boards. The whole raised on applied “one-piece” base mold with rare tall exposed dovetailed bracket feet at 8.5” height with spur and lobe returns. The solid ends extend to the floor doubling as glue blocks adding additional support to the delicate tall bracket feet. Back of chest has four vertical southern yellow pine and poplar boards unaltered with original handmade nails. Has beautiful original oxidation throughout. Condition: An exceedingly rare original surviving example. There are two minor losses to drawer moldings and three minor losses to bracket spurs. After close inspection, Jon Lambert believes this is one of the purest and most original Piedmont North Carolina chests he has ever seen and is very excited to offer this to the public. It is structurally sound, has very minor shrinkage, very minor scratches, and is overall an outstanding work of an early 19th century southern furniture maker. We encourage all museums, institutions, and collectors to view this in our gallery. Please see photos. Provenance: Emory Discovery Collection
