JEAN-BAPTISTE PIGALLE (Paris, 1714-1785). "Michel de Montaigne". Bronze. Signed. Measurements: 37 cm. height. Bronze sculpture signed by Jean-Baptiste Pigalle representing the Renaissance philosopher and writer Michel de Montaigne, author of "Essays" and inventor of the essay genre. He appears here characterized as a humanist with an aristocratic countenance, a ruffed collar, and an open book on his lap. Jean-Baptiste Pigalle was a French sculptor. Born into a family of cabinetmakers, he learned sculpture from Robert Le Lorrain and Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne. He was mainly influenced by Edmé Bouchardon. He moved to Italy from 1734 to 1737. Considered a great master by his contemporaries, his work stylistically straddles the baroque and neoclassical periods. One of his best known works is "Mercury tying his sandals", preserved in the Louvre Museum.

BUSTE D’HOMME Attribué à Jean-Baptiste PIGALLE (1714-1785) Marbre de réemploi H. 64 cm, L. 47 cm, P. 30 cm La sculpture réalisée en marbre présente un homme d’âge mûr, la tête légèrement tournée vers la droite, au regard porté vers l’horizon et aux traits réalistes. Il est vêtu selon la mode masculine en vigueur sous Louis XVI, une chemise à jabot, un gilet recouvert d’un manteau à fronces et porte une perruque à boucles attachée à l’arrière en catogan. Ce portrait sans concession d’un notable français est caractéristique des oeuvres de Jean-Baptiste Pigalle. Le Musée du Louvre conserve un portrait de Jean-Nicolas Moreau, chirurgien-chef à l’Hôtel-Dieu de Paris, aux éléments stylistiques très proches de notre buste. Né à Paris d’un père menuisier, Pigalle apprend les rudiments de son métier auprès de son voisin, Robert Le Lorrain, puis d’un élève de celui-ci, Jean-Baptiste II Lemoyne. En 1741, il est agréé à l’Académie royale sur présentation d’un Mercure attachant ses talonnières qu’il exécute en marbre pour sa réception en 1744, aujourd’hui conservé au Musée du Louvre. Dès 1742, le sculpteur reçoit des commandes des Bâtiments du Roi. Au Salon de 1750, Pigalle expose L’Enfant à la cage (Musée du Louvre). Ce portrait présumé du fils unique du financier Pâris de Montmartel, âgé d’un an, est une représentation non idéalisée, privilégiant la description anatomique au détriment d’une image gracieuse de l’enfance. Cette prédilection pour le portrait fut pour Pigalle une source d’inquiétudes. Diderot dira de lui « Le portrait est si difficile, que Pigalle m’a dit n’en avoir jamais fait sans être tenté d’y renoncer ». Pigalle n’a représenté pratiquement que des proches, des hommes ancrés dans la vie active et représentatifs d’une société bourgeoise plus proche de Greuze que de Quentin de La Tour. Son chef-d’oeuvre dans ce genre, le buste de Diderot en bronze nous dépeint l’ami - le sculpteur fut le parrain de la petite-fille de l’écrivain - au soir de sa vie, les traits fatigués, le regard las. Pigalle fut très admiré de son vivant. Ayant relativement peu produit, le sculpteur avait une haute exigence de son art. « Il semblait s’être fait une loi rigoureuse de n’imiter que la vérité, telle non seulement que les yeux peuvent la voir, mais telle que les mains pourraient la toucher » (Joubert).
