Oil on canvas, relined Fernand Piet (1869-1942) - French painter and graphic artist Signed and dated Fernand Piet 94 at the lower right Stretcher verso with the label Lohmann-Haus Elberfeld Lager Nr. 1294, Fernand Piet, Landschaft mit Brückenbögen; frame with seal of the Lohmann-Haus Dimensions: 27.4 x 41 cm Gilt decorative frame: 49 x 62.5 cm Provenance: private property North Rhine-Westphalia The work was formerly owned by Maximilian Lohmann, who was once the owner of the art gallery Lohmann-Haus at Hofaue 35a in Elberfeld-Wuppertal. In the 1920s, art exhibitions took place there Condition: The painting is altogether in good condition bearing usual signs of age and wear. The surface with lines of craquelure, primarily in the area of the impasto paint. In places there are marks, where the frame has rubbed, resulting occasionally in losses of paint. The frame is in very good condition. Fernand Piet (1869-1942) Fernand Piet was born in Paris. After graduation in 1885, he first learned till 1887 in the studio of the history painter Fernand Cormon and then under Eugène Carrière and Alfred Philippe Roll. He then attended the École nationale supérieur des beaux-arts de Paris and also took courses at the Académie de la Grande Chaumiere. 1896-1989 Piet toured France, Belgium and Holland. In 1905 he was admitted to the jury of the Salon des Independants, in 1925, he became a member of the Société National des Beaux-Arts. Paintings of the artist can be found today for example in the Hermitage in St. Petersburg and in the Neue Pinakothek in Munich. FERNAND PIET (Attributed) Paris 1869 - 1942 Paris, French French painter. Fernand Piet is known for his Gauguin-like depictions of Breton women. Influenced by the bohemian artistic world of the Montmartre area of Paris in the late 1890's, Piet met Henri Toulouse-Lautrec and began painting scenes of café life. Piet studied under Fernand Cormon at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. In 1893 he joined the Salon des Artistes Francais, and in 1921 joined the Salon des Independents. He was financially successful throughout lifetime and received a medal at the 1900 Universal Exhibition for his work.
