Roscommon, Florence Gillespie received her first painting lessons from Charles MacIver Grierson, who ran a school at Beltra, Sligo. She later studied under Orpen and was a model for a figure in "The Fairy Ring". She later taught art herself at Alexandra College and lived on the Sandford Road in Ranelagh.
