  • MANUEL PÍCOLO LÓPEZ, (Murcia, 1851 - 1913) "Lady". Oil on canvas glued to board. Presents faults and restorations.
    Oct. 10, 2023

MANUEL PÍCOLO LÓPEZ, (Murcia, 1851 - 1913) "Lady". Oil on canvas glued to board. Presents faults and restorations.

    Est: €1,500 - €2,000

MANUEL PÍCOLO LÓPEZ, (Murcia, 1851 - 1913) "Lady". Oil on canvas glued to panel. It presents faults and restorations. Measurements: 45 x 28 cm; 59 x 42 cm (frame). Pictorialist portrait that shows us a young lady in an interior with a reflexive attitude, oblivious to the spectator's gaze. The work is notable for its exceptional handling of chromatic contrasts, which are tinged by a dialectic between shadows and flashes of light, as can be seen especially in the young woman's dress. The work, which goes beyond the portrait, is enriched by an extensive still life made up of the objects that invade the room. The painter's palette, the Chinese porcelain, the shawl... are elements that reinforce the exuberance of the image, which was very much to the taste of the pictorialist trend developed in the 19th century. Manuel Pícolo began his artistic studies in Murcia and then completed them in Madrid, at the Escuela Superior, on a scholarship from the Diputación Provincial de Murcia, and later in Paris. He was awarded a gold medal at the Lorca Exhibition (Murcia) in 1876, and also took part in the National Exhibition of 1881, with a genre painting which was praised by the critics and acquired by the Portuguese ambassador in Madrid. Pícolo was an assiduous practitioner of decorative painting, a genre to which he devoted the best of his talent and to which belong the ceilings of the coffee room, the gambling room and the social room of the Casino of Murcia, which he was awarded by public competition. In the same building he created two large ensembles for the ceiling of the ballroom. He was awarded a third medal at the National Exhibition of 1887, and a third medal at the National Exhibition of 1892. Manuel Pícolo is currently represented in the Museum of Fine Arts in Murcia, the Prado Museum (works on deposit at the Supreme Court of Justice in Las Palmas and at the Padre Luis Coloma Institute in Jerez de la Frontera), as well as in various private collections.
